UFOs Over Salt Lake City - 'Bending Light' and Silent

The first one I sighted at about 7:10 pm. It had 3 very dim lights on the bottom? The lights were in a triangle pattern moving very fast, silent and NNW direction. It appeared to be bending light around it? It was like it was invisible, like you could see though it in a way, except for the lights on it. The lights didn’t blink at all and were white in color with a very slight gray yellow tint, and was very dim and hard to see. Very stealthily, no sound at all. The bending of the light around the lights reminded me of the movie “Predator”. Like when the creature was kind of visible yet non-visible. I’m in the flight path of the Jets that come in to land at the Salt Lake City International Airport, it was about the same height of the jets that come in to land but slightly higher and just west of me. My thumb held at full arms distance would be able to cover this object. The sighting was less than 4 to 5 seconds.

I’m excited to see such a thing, so I stay outside and watch the sky intently. I’m on the cell phone telling one of my friends about this sighting, he lives near Ogden City, about a 45 minute drive on the freeway. While I was telling him about the 7:10 pm sighting, I see another dim set of lights come straight towards me. Except this is Huge! It was a single row of 3 lights (dim) on a 45 degree angle. It moves straight over me with no sound at all and again in a NNW direction. The sighting was about 3 ½ seconds, In 3 ½ seconds it was gone! It was as low as the lowest jets fly that are preparing to land at the SLC Int. Airport. It appeared to be having light dimly radiating from above it with almost a shadow like area around it, I could almost see a craft on one side where the row of lights was. Over towards the right was where most of the light emanated from above the thing. It was like one side of a V of lights that were visible. This thing also seemed to be bending light making it was very hard to see. If I held my arm fully extended with the palm flat against it still would not fully be able to cover this object. Like I said earlier it was huge! The time was about 8:30 pm. I had binoculars around my neck but was so dumb founded at this object I didn’t even think of the binoculars or of the camera in my pocket, plus it was so fast!

I’m still outside watching the sky’s (8:45pm). My neighbor comes home and see’s me outside with a coat, hat, gloves and binoculars. With a puzzled look come over and asked me what I’m doing. I tell her and she starts asking me where I seen the object etc. So I’m telling her and all of a sudden I see another object barely visible in a sense and very high traveling in a NNW direction. I immediately remember my binoculars this time and quickly find this object in my 10x50 power binoculars. It was like a flying wing with about 9 round lights forming a slight V formation. It was fast and silent. The sighting was about 4 seconds long. Her eyes were better than mine. I asked what she saw and she also saw a triangle pattern of lights. I can’t say that I could see much more than the lights. But it did appear to be dark between the area of the lights in the form of a wing type V pattern. We also noticed it had no sound what so ever.

It’s cold out and I’m still out watching the sky, 3 in one night! What’s going on! Anyway it’s about 11:00 pm now, I’m in my back yard now, earlier I was in the driveway. I’m looking to the south. All of a sudden I see a dimly visible row of lights in a slight V pattern but yet almost straight across. It’s coming fast and low about the same height of the jets that come in to land at the airport. I quickly view this with my binoculars. I’m shocked! It’s not one thing, it’s a group of white triangle’s. They were moving in a, a moving formation 15 to 17 of them in triangle formations in each triangle pattern the lead one would drop back to the rear and then move back to the front again, this was happening in unison along this formation line, from one side to the other(One triangle of formation with one in between the next triangle formation with one on each side of the triangle formation. They changed pattern about 4 times). It was very strange and puzzling. It also reminded me of birds in flight but different too. The sighting was no more than 4 ½ seconds. I would guess each craft was a little bigger than a small airplane. They had no lights on them but had a white glow to them with a Ripley effect around them. They were not bright at all, dim yet very solid looking triangles. They were a perfect triangle shape with a slight V notched out the back edge of them. They were silent and fast. They went right over me. I stared at them intently with my binoculars. The width of the formation was wider than the palm of my hand flatly held out at arm’s length. Please see the 4th sketch below. I stayed outside until about 1:15 am, I didn’t see anything else peculiar. In all the sighting they all were traveling NNW, with only white lights or color.

All of this in one night! I will never forget this night!

Video: Olympic Flight 266 Tower Audio -Translated

The video and transcript have been translated:

Narrator: November 11, 2007, Flight 266 from London to Athens. Everything began when the captain of the flight No 266 of the company Olympic Airways, direct from London to Athens, a strange UFO or moving object in the area west of Athens. It was like a star, but much bigger and bright, and constantly changing its shape.

At the same time, the captains of two other flights of Olympic Airways, the 730 and 700 reported seeing the UFO as well.

This was also confirmed by the control tower in Athens, whose employees were able to observe Karystos, a small town on the island of Evia.

Civil contact with the military, which responded that they spotted the object, traveling at an icredible speed in a northern direction from the radar station on Mount Parnitha Athenian.

The presidium of the radar station describes the UFO as a slightly unusual and not attributable to aircraft known.

The strange object was also photographed by the soldiers of the station, but to date there have been no public photos.

Pilot: For the moment no, but its altitude and direction are not stable.

Torre: What exactly do you mean? Because I have no trace on the radar.

Pilot: Increases speed and its movements are irregular.

Torre: Olympic, continue current trajectory and altitude according to the flight plan and stay in touch.

Haunted Painting Returns to Maryland Tavern

Cockey's Tavern in Westminster has lost its haunted traces after a renovation completed this year, except for one, according to two former employees.

Carole Cook and Pat Thomas worked at the upscale restaurant from the 1970s through the 1990s. To them, rumors of a ghost between the dark, oppressive and seemingly haunted walls of the tavern were long gone after seeing the Historical Society of Carroll County's restoration of the building.

Until the two saw a startling Civil War-era painting. A bearded gentleman, who seems to be bleeding, stares out from the tavern's history into its future. The image of the dark-coated man grows darker; Cook said it seems more haunted now than ever although she said it always seemed foreboding.

The employees at the restaurant always thought the painting was of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, but Timmi Pierce, executive director of the Historical Society, has her doubts.

"If it is, it's a very poorly done portrait," Pierce said.

Cook said she can't really remember when it started, but one day when she was working at the restaurant she noticed the figure seemed to have blood coming out of his sleeve and on his thumb. No one remembered it being that way previously, she said, so they found it unsettling.

Over time, the shadow that looked like blood spread down his hand, and also spouted from his forehead, and also on his chest, she said.

Today, the painting still has those dark marks, but the whole painting seems to have darkened as well, making those dark spots less dramatic, Cook said.

Cathy Baty, curator of the Historical Society, said the darkening is caused by the varnish naturally darkening over time. Having hung in the restaurant and bar, exposed to cigarette smoke, the painting's varnish likely darkened faster than under normal conditions.

After the restaurant closed in 2000 because of a devastating fire caused by arson, many of the building's contents were sold at auction, including the painting. Pierce said the Historical Society got the painting back in January from the grandson of the man who bought it at auction.

Thomas said the "Grant painting" wasn't the only one that behaved strangely in Cockey's Tavern. She remembers a time when two women from Baltimore were having lunch at the restaurant, and one woman said she didn't believe in ghosts. Thomas warned her to hold her tongue, but before she knew it, a painting behind her fell off the wall and on her head, Thomas said.

There were other times when pictures would fall of walls without people touching them, candles would re-light themselves, and people would hear voices and the sounds of glasses tinkling when no one was there.

"You'd get a little scare, but (the ghost) never hurt anyone," Thomas said. "It was just creepy."

Pierce and a few other Historical Society members went through Cockey's Tavern in November for a "ghost seeking" expedition under the direction of Lois Szymanski, a local ghost hunter and writer. Using electronic equipment, they detected some presences, Pierce said, including some in her future office.

As for whether she believes the tales of ghosts in Cockey's Tavern, Pierce is a little skeptical.

"I reserve judgment," Pierce said.

...a Good Reason For Not Working at Wal-Mart

Police in a Chicago suburb say a Wal-Mart employee has died after setting himself on fire outside the store where he worked.

Police watch commander Randy Sater says 58-year-old Larry Graziano of Carol Stream set himself ablaze late Thursday outside the store in Bloomingdale. It was not immediately clear how he caught on fire, but Sater says lighter fluid was involved.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office says Graziano was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead early Friday.

Sater says Graziano told police he "couldn't take it anymore."

Police say bystanders tried to help, but Graziano fought them off.

Wal-Mart spokesman Dan Fogleman says Graziano had been with the company for seven years and that he had no reported personnel issues.

Radioactive Fugitive on the Run

Police have been warned not to handcuff themselves to a fugitive whose medical treatment has made him radioactive.

Police are hunting down a man whose medical treatment has made him radioactive.

Thomas Marius Leopold, 42, didn't appear at a court hearing in London this week on child pornography charges.

His lawyer Jeannie Mackay told the court his treatment for a thyroid problem made him radioactive.

"Please warn officers that when he is arrested he might be radioactive," Judge John Price said.

"This is not a joke."

It's likely Mr Leopold is being treated with radioactive iodine for an overactive thyroid, according to Royal Victoria Infirmary radiation protection adviser Mike Keir, who claimed the risk to police and the public was minimal.

"You'd have to spend a lot of time in close contact to have any significant effect," Mr Keir said.

"The only thing I would suggest is that they wouldn't have an officer handcuffed to him."

Mr Leopold was arrested in July 2006 but the trial was postponed due to his poor health. Ms Mackay said his poor health had caused the latest postponement and said her client had travelled to Ireland.

Mr Leopold was "doing everything to make it as difficult as he can to let the trial go ahead," Judge Price said, issuing a warrant for his arrest.

China's 'Cat-Boy'

A 'cat-boy' has stunned medics with his ability to see in pitch black with eyes that glow in the dark.

Doctors have studied Nong Youhui’s amazing eyesight since his father took him to hospital in Dahua, southern China, concerned over his bright blue eyes.

Dad Ling said: "They told me he would grow out of it and that his eyes would stop glowing and turn black like most Chinese people but they never did."

Medical tests conducted in complete darkness show Youhui can read perfectly without any light and sees as clearly as most people do during the day.

Experts believe he was born with a rare condition called leukodermia which has left his eyes with less protective pigment and more sensitive to light.

1.5 Million-Year-Old Human Footprints Discovered in Kenya

Early humans had feet like ours and left lasting impressions in the form of 1.5 million-year-old footprints some of which were made by feet that could wear a size 9 men s shoe. The findings at a Northern Kenya site represent the oldest evidence of modern-human foot anatomy. They also help tell an ancestral story of humans who had fully transitioned from tree-dwellers to land walkers. “In a sense it s like putting flesh on the bones ” said John Harris an anthropologist with the Koobi Fora Field School of Rutgers University.

“The prints are so well preserved,” Harris and other colleagues report in the Feb. 27 issue of the journal Science on finding several footprint trails within two sedimentary rock layers. An upper sedimentary layer included two trails of two prints each one group of seven prints and a variety of isolated prints. The lower layer had a trail of two prints and a single isolated print likely from a smaller juvenile human. The researchers identified the footprints as probably belonging to a member of Homo ergaster an early form of Homo erectus. Such prints include modern foot features such as a rounded heel a human-like arch and a big toe that sits parallel to other toes. By contrast apes have more curved fingers and toes made for grasping tree branches. The earliest human ancestors such as Australopithecus afarensis still possessed many ape-like features more than 2 million years ago — the well-known “Lucy” specimen represents one such example.

Investigators Claim Paranormal Evidence Found at Palmyra, NY Museum

Look closely: Some say they see the apparition of a young boy floating to the right of the register inside the Wm. Phelps General Store on Market Street in Palmyra, in this photo taken within the past year.

Phantom footsteps, whispers, a swaying chandelier and a piano that played on its own exposed the presence of ghostly spirits residing in two local museums on Market Street. Or so say members of a few ghost-hunting teams that recently camped out with some high-tech equipment.

The spook sleuths from Scientific Paranormal Investigations and Finger Lakes Area Spirit Hunters on Thursday, Feb. 19, shared their findings with a crowd of about 55.

They played recordings they said captured whispered ghostly responses to questions and faint piano playing. They shared bone-chilling stories of apparitions and chills and breezes that seemed to come from nowhere.

“A feeling of dread engulfed me,” said Rob Henning, co-founder and case manager for Scientific Paranormal Investigations of Palmyra, as he described an encounter he said he had with a young girl in the piano room in the general store. “Immediately, we were blasted with cold, dry air.”

The general store and attached living quarters, at 140 Market St., is preserved store that thrived on Erie Canal commerce and a bustling downtown back from the early 1800s to the 1940s. Some believe its visitors are not just docents and tourists but also some long-dead members of the Phelps family, including spiritualist and musician Sibyl Phelps, who lived above the store and became something of a shut-in in the years before her death in 1976.

The Historical Museum just up Market Street, meanwhile, is on the site of a 1964 blaze that claimed seven people, six of whom were children. The museum itself is an old hotel that was moved from William Street in the 1970s during urban renewal work.

Bonnie Hays, director of Historic Palmyra Inc., was contacted about a year ago by members of the Victor-based Finger Lakes Area Spirit Hunters. “They said, ‘we’ve always wanted to come to your buildings, would you mind if we came?’” she said. “Of course, I said, ‘We’d love it.’”

And so, for the past several months, the Spirit Hunters and Scientific Paranormal Investigations have surveyed the museums with video, camera, audio, high-tech night vision and thermal-vision equipment.

The investigators aren’t the only ones who’ve experienced strange happenings in the museums.

“I swear a black cat came in the front door of the Phelps Store, walked down through the store and up the stairs,” said Ralph Kommer. “Bonnie (Hays) and I looked for it, but never found anything. She left food. It was never touched.”

Hacker One Step Closer to Extradition to the US

British computer hacker Gary McKinnon has lost the latest round of his battle against extradition to the US.

The Crown Prosecution Service refused to bring charges against him in the UK.

Mr McKinnon, 42, from Wood Green, north London, faces up to 70 years in prison if found guilty in the US of breaking into military computers.

His lawyers appealed for him to be prosecuted in the UK on lesser charges, but the CPS said the best place for the case to be heard was the US.

Glasgow-born Mr McKinnon has always admitted hacking into the computer systems in 2001-2 - which the US government says caused damage costing $800,000 (£550,000).

In total, he hacked into 97 government computers belonging to organisations including the US Navy and Nasa.

Mr McKinnon has always said he had no malicious intent but was looking for classified documents on UFOs which he believed the US authorities had suppressed.

He has signed a statement accepting that his hacking constituted an offence under the UK's Computer Misuse Act 1990.

The CPS said it found enough evidence to bring charges against the hacker under the act for obtaining "unauthorised access with intent".

But Alison Saunders, head of the CPS organised crime division, said: "The evidence we have does not come near to reflecting the criminality that is alleged by the American authorities."

She added: "These were not random experiments in computer hacking, but a deliberate effort to breach US defence systems at a critical time which caused well-documented damage.

"They may have been conducted from Mr McKinnon's home computer - and in that sense there is a UK link - but the target and the damage were transatlantic.

"The bulk of the evidence is located in the United States, the activity was directed against the military infrastructure of the United States, the investigation commenced in the United States and was ongoing, and there are a large number of witnesses, most of whom are located in the United States."

'Years of agony'

Mr McKinnon's mother, Janis Sharp, said she was "heartbroken by the lack of compassion" shown towards her son.

"Gary is a gentle man with Aspergers - not a dangerous terrorist.

"His obsessions led him to search US computer systems. Wrong, yes, but extraditing him to a high-security prison knowing he won't survive - surely no-one can honestly believe that punishment fits the crime?

"We've suffered an agonising seven years which has ruined the lives and health of my family."

Mr McKinnon, who was arrested by British police in 2002, has already appealed unsuccessfully to the House of Lords and the European Court of Human Rights to avoid extradition.

His battle now rests on a judicial review of the government's decision to extradite him.

Last August, Mr McKinnon was diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome and his lawyers said he was at risk of suicide if extradited.

Archeologists Discover Elongated Skulls in Siberia

Archeologists in Siberia have discovered an unusual series of ancient, mishapen skulls dating back to the 4th century AD. Researchers are not sure who these people were or why they intentionally elongated their skulls. Similar specimans have been found in ancients South American burials.

Paranormal: Mother Desperately Seeks Help For Daughter

I recently received this email from a desperate mother (typos have been revised):

I am looking for some kind of help and answers, please. I have always been a person that believed in the paranormal. I gave birth to a beautiful daughter in 2002 and life was fine. Unknown to me it would be altered by unseen things. Ever since my baby was born she has sensed something else that we cant see. She always wakes up screaming and staring into the dark like she has just seen a ghost or something. Much to my surprise it was that. She couldn't tell me at that age but as she got older she would tell me that she saw things. Mostly it was dark figures, at times she saw dead people. I thought it had finally stopped till she started talking about seeing dark figures floating around the room. I don't know why the dark shadows seek my daughter but it scares me. She has slept with me for her whole life. She is now 6 years old and still sees things. It isn't every night but enough that she stays scared. Is there anything we can do to make this go away? Her father said that on his side of the family almost every women in the family had the power to see things and converse with them. So is this something that will always be in her life. Unknown Object Crashes Through Dallas House

A six-pound chunk of charred metal blasted through the roof of a house in Southeast Oak Cliff Tuesday evening.

The object crashed through the second floor of the home in the 7800 block of Buford Drive before coming to rest in the kitchen on the ground floor.

No one was home at the time of the incident and there were no injuries.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue biohazard unit checked the unidentified flying object for radiation and found none.

Police say they have no idea what the metal is or where it came from. State and regional officials have been notified.

Investigators say they are not aware of any other reports of similar activity in the area.

Two large man-made satellites collided in orbit over Siberia on February 10, and military officials have been on alert since then for possible falling debris.

A large meteor fell to earth near Waco on February 15, and the fireball could be seen over a wide area of North and Central Texas.

Los Angeles' Ghostly Lounges

Los Angeles has had its share of frightening problems. Consider the riots of 1992, the earthquake of 1994 and the ever-present danger of drunk-driving starlets in 2006. Now Los Angeles is facing another terrifying crisis, and this time it’s affecting our nightlife. This town has a serious ghost problem—and it's spookier than ever thanks to the newly opened Crocker Club and the apparitions who supposedly reside here.

Located in the former Crocker Citizens National Bank in Downtown L.A., this 6,000-square-foot venue includes safe-deposit boxes and a genuine functioning vault door, which serves as the entrance to the club’s Mosler Lounge. Though the cocktail waitresses use modern innovations such as handheld PDA units, owner Vincent Terzian kept the building’s historic beauty intact. The most notable carry-over from yesteryear, however, might be invisible.

Near the private studio rooms is a secluded second bar called the Ghost Bar. While this might be a good place to start a ghost hunt, acclaimed psychic medium and paranormal investigator Virginia Marco tells us that at least one of the Crocker Club’s ghosts roams the entire building. Upon visiting the venue, Marco made contact with a spirit named Travis, a bald, English-speaking man in his 40s or 50s who was working in the building at the time of his death. According to Marco, Travis has green eyes, no wife and no kids. Marco went on to explain how Travis "missed his opportunity to cross over" to the afterlife and now resides between this world and the next. And though Travis apparently gets excited when patrons see him, he's none too pleased with all the new people coming into his building. “He's pissed,” Marco explained.

As the old adage goes, one should always get a second opinion when dealing with the supernatural or interdimensional. We enlisted the help of celebrated psychic medium Jack Rourke, who visited the Crocker Club during construction to evaluate its paranormal activity. Upon visiting the site, Rourke noticed several unusual phenomena, many of which have been reported by others, including an unexplained odor of cigar smoke and the feeling of being watched while walking through the club. The feeling of being watched can make your hair stand on end, which is called "piloerection"; Rourke claims it's caused by "nerves in the dermis becoming stimulated by an electromagnetic field."

Rourke also claimed to have experienced, via extrasensory perception (a talent for which he is known), heavy foot traffic in the lounge. He specifically identified one spirit, a “smartly dressed woman in period attire of the late 1940s or '50s.” Rourke referred to this woman as Jane, adding that Terzian and others had also felt the presence of a woman.

Whatever the cause of the Crocker Club's spookiness, it's the perfect place to scare yourself silly with some friends. And while it's unlikely the club will experience a lack of attractive living women anytime soon, it is nice to know there's always Jane. And if you spill a drink, Travis should be along to clean it up shortly—though he might not be very happy about it.

Meanwhile, paranormal activity has been reported and investigated all over Hollywood. The glitz and glamour can be distracting, but it's not enough to hide a dark, spooky underbelly, where the nightlife and the afterlife coexist. Many paranormal investigators consider the Comedy Store to be one of the most haunted locations in L.A. Just as Comedy Store alums have had trouble crossing over into horror flicks (Robin Williams in "One Hour Photo," Jim Carrey in the "Number 23"), the ghosts at this old school house of yucks are largely believed to be mobsters from the 1940s and '50s, who had trouble crossing over into the afterlife after they were whacked. Prior to opening as the Comedy Store in 1972, this location was known as Ciro's, a popular restaurant with close ties to the mob.

Further east, in Hollywood, there’s the ghost of Peggy Entwhisle. Legend has it Entwhistle, the would-be actress best known for diving off the H of the Hollywood sign and killing herself in 1932, stills wanders the area around Beachwood Drive, including local stores and bars such as Bob's Frolic Room on Hollywood Boulevard. When asked if she had visited lately, a bartender declined to comment, but one helpful regular had the real scoop, telling us "she just left." Whether this is truly the roaming ghost of Ms. Entwhisle, the original B-lister, or simply a figment of our collective imagination has been disputed. Dr. Larry Montz, of the International Society for Paranormal Research, says he believes the visions are not that of an actual ghost, but rather a "residual," or a lasting image of a particularly intense event, such as swan-diving off a 40-foot H. As the story goes, Entwhistle killed herself when she didn't make it as an actress, creating one of the first and most highly publicized B-list actress meltdowns the tabloids have ever seen.

Ghostly Patron Still Visits Cricketers Arms in Keighley

The ghost of a man in a flat cap is said to haunt the Cricketers Arms, in Keighley.

Landlord John Mitchell claims to have seen the ghostly figure three times while locking up at night. He suspects the man died in the late 1950s following an incident at the Coney Lane pub.

Local ghost hunter Malcolm Hanson is now looking into the possible origin of the spectre.

He hopes to reveal the full story of the ghost in his upcoming book Mysterious Keighley.

And he wants to hear other people’s spooky stories about the Cricketers and other old Keighley pubs.

Mr Hanson first highlighted the Cricketers story in 2006 while leading ghost tours for Keighley Festival. He and his party called at the tiny pub for a half-time rest during their town centre trek. Mr Mitchell laid on a fake spook to shock the ghost hunters, involving fishing wire and a dummy. But he believes there is a real ghost haunting the narrow passage linking the outside door with the bar. In recent years he has seen a figure through the glass at least three times.

He said: “I turned the lights out and looked into the porchway and there was a figure, a man with a flat cap.

“I shouted and turned the lights on but he wasn’t there. About a year later I saw him again.

“One of our customers told us the story about in the late 1950s or 1960s when a guy died just outside the pub.

“There was an accident in here. He went out, banged his head on the pavement and died.”

Mr Mitchell also feels an icy presence in the cellar of the hostelry from time to time. His cleaner has seen the figure in the morning, sitting at a table with his bike next to him. He was transparent and had a flat cap.

He has owned the Cricketers Arms for 11 years and moved in to run it six years ago. He did not believe in ghosts until his 1990s’ tenancy at the Brewery Arms, formerly the Masons Arms, in nearby Longcroft.

“In the 1800s there was a lot of trouble. One night I glanced over to the cellar door and there was a woman standing there in Victorian dress. It always seemed to be midnight, so I started waiting till quarter past to lock-up.”

Question Asked By UFOlogists: What Will (or Can) President Obama Reveal?

Will President Obama be the one to finally open the government's secret files on UFO's? That's the burning question at this year's International UFO Congress going on in Laughlin.

UFO researchers think there's a huge volume of suppressed evidence that should be made public.

The vendor room at any UFO conference generally represents the fun, non-serious side of the phenomena, where shoppers can fill all their UFO needs -- whether its a drum of Area 51 ooze or blow up aliens, alien sculptures, or an indispensable cattle mutilation calendar.

Vast libraries of UFO books and UFO videos provide hints about how far, and how wide, the discussion has grown. For the past 19 years, Tim Crawford's company, UFO TV, has marketed this material to the world, "The interest has expanded a lot to include ancient mysteries, science mysteries, political. The people classify this as need to know."

The phrase "need to know" could serve as the unofficial slogan of the UFO Congress and most other UFO gatherings. Researchers have long contended, and with good reason, that the U.S. government has withheld files and other evidence about UFO's and UFO incidents.

"Do we know what's going on inside? I don't think so," said Nuclear Physicist Stan Friedman.

Friedman has chased the UFO mystery for more than 40 years. Although the Air Force did release some UFO files from its Project Blue Book years ago, Friedman points to the so-called Bollender Memo, an order from the Air Force that all UFO cases involving national security must be sent "somewhere else." Friedman says that alone confirms that some UFO files are kept hidden.

In the past few years, something called exo-politics has emerged, a disclosure movement which calls for the release of all UFO files. Proponents are encouraged by President Obama's promises of more open government. Friendman is not optimistic.

"I don't think it's going to happen. For one thing, he's got much more important things. The whole planet is in sad shape," he said. "People have the wrong idea that the president knows everything. First, there's too much to know. I don't think he has a need to know yet."

This won't discourage speakers at the UFO Congress from encouraging the new administration to pull back the curtain of secrecy and open the UFO files as many other western governments have done in the past two years.

Vendors like Tim Crawford know there is an enduring public hunger for this kind of information, "Average people are asking bigger questions than the scientists."

Paranormal Investigator Possesses 'Sixth Sense'

He is the North-East’s very own ‘ghostbuster’. Julia Breen meets Trevor Weller, a psychic who runs a paranormal investigations business, and finds out more about his work.

Like the child in the hit film Sixth Sense, Trevor Weller claims he used to “see dead people” when he was growing up. From the headless rail worker who wandered along the railway line in Darlington searching for his head, to ghostly armies of soldiers marching across the fields behind the Cummins factory, he was constantly haunted by spirits.

But, being brought up on Firthmoor, in Darlington, he says he started to deny what he was seeing, eventually managing to block them out, fearing that his peers would think him “soft”.

“When I was growing up I could sense things around me and see things,” says Trevor, who now lives in Trimdon Station, County Durham.

“When I met my wife, Anne, she asked me to go along to a psychic fair with her. I had grown up in Firthmoor and wasn’t into things like that – I had blocked it all out. But I decided to go along anyway.”

At the fair, Trevor met a man who changed his life. “I thought it was a lot of rubbish, but this guy just caught my eye. There was something about him, so I went over and this guy gave me a psychic reading which was amazing.

He was not just giving me people’s names, he was practically giving me their addresses.

“He said to me to go out, get yourself some tarot cards, get developed (as a medium).”

Trevor left the fair, not knowing what to think, but he couldn’t forget the man he had met. A few weeks later he went along to the same fair, in another town.

“It was the same group, so I went along to pick this guy’s brains some more. When we turned up all the readers were the same, all the organisers were the same, but no one had a clue who had done this reading. No one knew him or recognised him when I described him, which was really strange. To this day I don’t know who he is – but he inspired me to go ahead and start developing myself as a psychic.”

Now Trevor runs a business, Cleveland Paranormal Investigators, which offers “Most Haunted”-style spiritual investigations, house cleansings, psychic fairs and tarot parties.

Trevor wears a fleece jacket with the company logo on it – which is similar to that of the Ghostbusters film. When his phone rings, it is with a Ghostbusters’ ringtone.

Two years ago, he and his wife set up a shop in the Parkway Centre, Coulby Newham, near Middlesbrough, selling crystals, incense and other spiritual items, and they also offered tarot readings. They moved the shop to Redcar, east Cleveland, about 18 months ago.

He says: “That is where the paranormal side came in. People started asking us to do mediumship at spiritual fairs, so we decided to set up a company to deal with that side of things.

“Then we got people phoning us up at midnight, saying the kids couldn’t sleep and no one could settle because of something in their house, and they’d ask us to go and investigate.”

Trevor offers investigations of private houses and spiritual clearings if necessary – but he doesn’t have proton packs or particle accelerators to capture rogue spirits like the Ghostbusters. Instead, he investigates using a camera, electro-magnetic field readings, a thermometer for temperature readings, and incense for “cleansing” the house.

He recalls one incident where an unquiet spirit was causing problems in a family home.

“They called us out because the kids weren’t settling and they were sensing and hearing things. The team went in, took pictures and readings, and I went in and was picking things up on a spiritual level.

“There was a male malevolent spirit there who wanted to cause trouble, and he thrived off the stress and anxiety he was causing in the house. The more he did it, the more negativity built up and he was feeding on that.

“We used salt water, incense and crystals to drive him out. We forced him further and further up in the house because he was keeping as far away from us as possible.

“It takes three or four days for things to calm down, but the kids were much happier afterwards, and the atmosphere of the whole house improved, including the ill health and stress.”

There are two types of spiritual disturbances in homes, explains Trevor. The first is residual haunting, where events from history are replayed.

“We can’t do much about that, it’s just one of those things,” says Trevor. “But the second type, visitations, are something different.

That is active haunting. We will carry out cleansings of the house, which a priest would call an exorcism. We will let the people know who is there, and why they are there, and let the homeowner decide whether they want us to rid the house of the spirit or not.”

But Trevor doesn’t charge through the nose for this service. “I don’t want to make money out of that kind of thing,” he says. “So, we just ask for our costs to be covered.”

The main thrust of the business is in paranormal investigations of public haunted sites – similar to the investigations in hit cable TV show Most Haunted. He is also organising events next month at the North-East Aircraft Museum, in Sunderland, and the Heugh Gun Battery, in Hartlepool, in April.

At the end of last year, he worked with Middlesbrough Council and children at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum to carry out an investigation there, teaching children history through the paranormal.

He says: “When we do investigations with adults we have table tipping, glass moving, ouija boards, and so on, but obviously we can’t do seances with children, so we let them use the equipment and they took loads of pictures and took readings. They were fascinated.”

For now, Trevor is concentrating on building up the business and also doing a course in native US beliefs. His “spirit guide” – who puts him in touch with spirits on the other side – is the Squaw of a native American chief. Even as a child he was drawn to that culture and hopes that by finding out more about them he can improve his psychic abilities.

However, he admits he does still have to block himself from seeing spirits all the time.

Blame For 'Georgia Bigfoot Hoax' Placed On Biscardi

Steve Kulls of Sasquatchdetective.com has recently posted an 'official report' ...his account of what happened during the 'Georgia Bigfoot Hoax' debacle in the summer of 2008. Frankly..and predictably, he lays the blame on Tom Biscardi. Below is a preamble to his report and the link to the website:

This official report while covering a specific incident which occurred in 2008, is actually a culmination of several investigations initiated in April of 2006 by Steve Kulls, the writer of this report. While it will begin with the details of a hoax which originated from Georgia, it will end up the investigation of the man whom propagated this hoax, C. Thomas Biscardi, and an exposè of his company; Searching for Bigfoot, Inc., it's real purpose, and will answer all the questions about this incident and surrounding. Much of this information came about upon the conclusion of this hoax and subsequent investigation.

This writer took many accusations and allegations, while knowing he was actually withholding some evidence, until such time was right to present it in a detailed, formatted and final disposition as well as allowing some time to pass and for emotions to simmer to obtain the information necessary to expose the absolute truth in the matter surrounding the original hoaxers Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, and their relationship with Tom Biscardi.

It also should be noted that in any investigation of this magnitude, as in the criminal investigative world, dealing with "less than innocent" people will occur. This sadly is a simple fact, but dealing with people whom were involved was necessary to understand motivations and gather the required physical evidence and proper investigation via interviews, fact gathering and visiting on site locations.

Of the three, two have come forward to admit their share of the blame. The one whom hasn't has the most to lose, Tom Biscardi. Biscardi, has not answered one tough question when it comes to complicity in this hoax. Through thorough investigation and interviews, what really transpired in Georgia can now be fully explained.


This for many will also reveal exactly, my involvement in the events surrounding this debacle. Many sadly thought my involvement was dubious. And granted in the event the alleged body was real, yes, I would have had a large role to fill, and was promised some kind of monetary gain, and rightfully so. But I never had anything in writing with Searching for Bigfoot or Biscardi over this ordeal, as amounts and percentages were never discussed. And I never publicly stated this was real and privately, told people that Biscardi stated he had seen it and it was real. Through my travels, and slow arduous investigations of him, he had never lied to me about current research events. So unfortunately my tendency was to believe him. Yes that was my mistake, perhaps I lost my "Donnie Brasco" reason for being there in the first place. I mean how could he lie about something so big? Well he never did to me...until now.

The facts contained herein were gathered between April 2006 - February 2009. The revelations of Biscardi's involvement in the Georgia Bigfoot Hoax and evidence, were collected and documented February 3rd - 6th, 2009.

Illinois Lounge Has Quiet 'Butt' Distinctive Spirits

Tim Brueggeman, co-owner of the Spirits Lounge in the old Masonic Temple on State Street, says the name of his bar and restaurant can be interpreted two ways.

"We have had two or three ghost investigations here," Brueggeman said. "They all seem to gather evidence that they interpret as being (paranormal activity). This is supposedly one of the most haunted buildings in the area."

According to the company's Web site, several paranormal investigators believe that former Masons continue to haunt the building, including the famous "Mr. Butt Print" who sits on dusty surfaces and leaves his mark.

Although he has not personally seen anything too spooky, Brueggeman does not rule out any possibilities.

"We have had a few occurrences," he said. "We had one guest who claimed to be a skeptic and he said a ghost grabbed his shoulder, so who knows?

"Hopefully the ghosts like the changes we have made to the building."

Spirits Lounge opened in May 2007 as a combination bar and banquet center. Co-owner Gary Graham purchased the building in March 2006.

"We have been friends for about eight years," Brueggeman said. "We would go boating together.

"Greg's house was on the haunted Alton tour, and he noticed this place on the tour as well. When the building came up for sale a couple of years later, he bought it."

Although the location was perfect for what the duo had in mind, to say that renovations were extensive would be an understatement.

"We really gutted it and built the bar from scratch," said Brueggeman, who also works at Wachovia Securities. "We filled up close to 20 full-size dumpsters. We cut the granite for the bar and restained everything. I must have lost 30 pounds by the time we opened.

"I thought it was going to be the death of me."

In the end, the hard work seems to have paid off. Customers walk in the front door, take a set of stairs to the left, and are greeted to a friendly yet classy bar on the second floor. Guests can sit in the dining area for a relaxing dinner, or stake claim on a bar stool for some friendly chatter with the bartender.

The third floor is Brueggeman's pride and joy. The 3,600-square-foot banquet room features space for 220 guests, six chandeliers and a separate bar and is perfect for weddings, special events and business meetings. Brueggeman said a wedding could be held in the elegant banquet room, followed by a festive reception just one floor down.

"We can do it all in one place," he said. "That has worked out really well. The dance floor is portable if space is an issue. The DJ or band can also use the elevated stage above the bar."

Even the restrooms are impressive, with green marble everywhere and high-powered hand dryers that must be experienced to be believed.

April 2008 saw the introduction of a full restaurant menu including appetizers, salads, pizzas and full dinner selections.

"(Our menu) pretty much covers the gamut," Brueggeman said. "Strangely enough, the spicy olives are one of our biggest sellers. They are cheese-filled, deep-fried, and come with homemade chipotle dipping sauce."

Spirits Lounge boasts an experienced service team, including bartender Brett Ayres, renowned local chef John Strader, and manager Paivi Pulkkinen, who ensures everything is running smoothly on a nightly basis.

"She really sweats the details," Brueggeman said.

The team also stays active in the Alton area with events and fund-raising opportunities.

"We are one of the supporters of the block parties," Brueggeman said. "We try to stay involved with the community. (For example), 5A's are hosting a trivia night here on February 20."

The bar features live music events and drink specials, including $3 Cosmo martinis on Wednesday and Thursday and $2 Bud Light draft every day.

The building also will be the subject of a television special on ghosts featuring local paranormal investigator Gary Hawkins later this year.

Unusual Photo of 'Alien' Surfaces

Dear Sir,

The included picture was taken by my grandfather in the early 1930s. I scanned the image immediately after he gave it to me last week. I wish to remain anonymous since I don't want anything to do with any research or whatever on this.

I know it looks like an alien or a Bigfoot and I know my grandfather was telling me the truth about him taking this picture. That's why I think it should be in the right hands. You are the only one I'm sending this to, so please respect my privacy and don't contact me about this.

The only additional information is contained on the bottom of the full size image, which tells us the following:

The picture was taken in the early 1930s by the sender's grandfather, who lived in Alaska. The entitiy was first seen when the grandfather was on his way to a lake. He chased the entity until he got close enough to take this one picture. It was some four months before the photograph was developed, being in in a remote, sparsely populated area. The sender received the picture from his grandfather only last week His grandfather died the day after giving him the photo, and relating his story.

To say the least, I was intrigued by this mysterious message. What could this image be? I download it, and after looking at it a few moments, I knew it would be controversial to say the least. Little did I know that there would be more than one mystery to solve. As I began the task of selecting and cutting the area around the small creature, I thought to myself: "Wouldn't it be something if this was the real thing, even though it may never be proven as such?" What if this gentleman's grandfather had really filmed a creature from another world, and I was looking at the proof. My excitement was only tempered by the thought of not being able to prove it one way or the other. I would soon be faced, however, with the second mystery.

After doing a couple of trial runs, I was relatively pleased with the results, considering the fact that the scanned image was from a photograph approximately 70 years old. As I looked through several of the cutouts I had made, I thought maybe I saw something...something else. The entity's right lower arm/hand region seemed to be obscured; but by what? So I went back to the original scan, and starting working on that particular area. What I finally saw, or thought I saw was a second, even smaller entity. Is it possible that we had a female with her child? I had done what I could, and the results were inconclusive.

I thought of the Patterson Bigfoot film that had been the cornerstone of believers for many years, until it was proven as a hoax. In other words, I have no definite answer as to what we are looking at here.It is one of three things:

1) An outright hoax, (someone in a suit, a la Patterson) and all the time and effort was wasted.

2) A single unknown being, origin unknown, and we are without a way to go any further toward discovery.

3) Number 2, with two beings.

All is not lost, and just like beauty being in the eye of the beholder, so is the result of what we have here.

The 1996 Varginha Alien Incident: Brazil's Roswell

In 1996 in Varginha, Brazil, during the course of several weeks at least two and perhaps as many as six alien creatures were captured or killed and turned over to American authorities, and a UFO may have crashed. Eyewitnesses described the creatures as humanoid and 3 to 4 feet tall. They had dark brown, hairless skin, big triangular heads with three short "horns" on top, and huge red eyes that were vertically oval.

The first video describes the alien creature (low quality video...sorry) and the second is of the UFO. The city of Varginha, Brazil has had some very unusual phenomena the past decade or so.

The Varginha UFO incident was a mass-media information incident, mainly by TV, in Varginha, Brazil, in 1996 involving popular reports of unidentified flying objects and strange creatures (allegedly extraterrestrials) which were supposedly captured by Brazilian officials. However, no Brazilian officials affirm the unusual history.

The case generated extensive publicity in Central and South America, and was mentioned in the Wall Street Journal.

The Brazilian government officially denies that anything unusual occurred, but some theorists have charged that there was a cover up. Skeptics cite the lack of reliable sources as evidence against its actuality; the testimony of unnamed, anonymous "official" individuals are frequently featured.

UFO investigator Kevin D. Randle writes that "this case is as complicated as any other in the UFO field." Randle notes that there is a lack of physical evidence supporting the case, and adds, "In fact, we have been unable to verify much of anything."

Overview

According to some mass-media, the creature was first sighted by three women ranging from 14 to 21 years old: sisters Liliane and Valquíria Fátima Silva, and their friend Kátia Andrade Xavier. They allegedly saw the creature in the afternoon of January 20, 1996: A biped about 1.6 metres (5 ft), with a large head and very thin body, with V-shaped feet, brown skin, and large red eyes. It seemed to be wobbly or unsteady, and the girls assumed it was injured or sick. The creature was said to have a strong, unpleasant odor. Some have noted physical similarities between this alleged creature and the chupacabra, a cryptozoological creature reported in Puerto Rico and Central America.

The Silva sisters say they fled, then told their mother that they had seen the devil. She didn’t believe them at first, but when she had gone to the area they had seen the creature and smelled a strong ammonia-like odor, her opinion changed. After relating their tale to families and friends, rumors began to spread throughout the city: UFOs were sighted, aliens were captured. Two days later, another creature was allegedly found lying along a road. Three military trucks were sent to retrieve it. It was captured by S2 officials (Brazil's military intelligence), and sent to a hospital to be examined.

As related by Moffett in the Wall Street Journal, "The army finds itself besieged on several fronts. A local mystic predicts that Varginha will suffer some kind of cataclysm this September as retribution for its blitzkrieg on the interplanetary visitors. An armed-forces news conference marking 'Victory Day' in World War II degenerated into a shouting match between a general and a television reporter pressing him about the extraterrestrials. An official briefing to debunk UFO conspiracies was overshadowed by an auto mechanic's claim to have seen yet another weird cylindrical aircraft, a cosmic encounter he re-enacted with the aid of an aluminum coffee thermos ... Stanton Friedman, a Canada-based UFO expert, says Varginha has the makings of a 'cosmic Watergate.'"[3]

Brazilian mass media was saturated for some time with speculation, rumors and accounts regarding the UFO's and the strange creatures. A soldier, Marco Eli Cherese, was said to have died under mysterious circumstances related to the UFO affair.

Vitorio Pacaccini, a Brazilian UFO enthusiast, became a central figure in the Varginha affair. He appeared on television, offering testimony he reported was from reliable government officials, which confirmed the events as true. The sources, however, were anonymous, said Pacaccini, and feared reprisal. Randle notes that Pacaccini insists that the first to encounter the strange creature was not the girls, but rather, a group of fire department workers. In the early morning of January 20, according to Pacaccini, four firemen were alerted to a strange animal which had been first spotted by a group of boys, who began throwing rocks at it. They captured the dizzy creature, and whisked it away.

Moffett writes that there have been over half a dozen sightings of the creatures, though "it is unclear how all of these beings could have fit into the minivan-sized spacecraft that was spotted here in January." There was disagreement as to whether one creature had been sighted multiple times, or if several creatures had been sighted individually.

Officials in Varginha denied that anything unusual occurred, but considered dedicating a park to the creatures.

On the other hand, this incident made the city very famous, bringing numerous ET tourists. Now, the UFO tourism has become an important commercial activity of Varginha city. Many "Grey" dolls with famous football team uniforms are on sale in the main streets.

Severed Human Head Found Hanging Over Bangkok Bridge

A man's head has been found in a plastic bag dangling 25ft from a bridge in Bangkok. Police are trying to identify the western man, who could be British, slain in a bloody mafia style killing.

A clumsy suicide note was etched on to a railing of the gold painted 1.5 mile long Rama VIII suspension bridge but police said this was a diversion tactic.

The note read: "Kath, I want but I can not. I came to Bangkok to be you", and suggested the author could have been a foreign tourist who was jilted in love.

But police Colonel Atcharat Heamathanon said: “The case has interested the most senior police here.

“This looks much more like a mafia, or drug related killing. It’s not a suicide. The victim just has been made out to look like a heart-broken tourist.”

The bad use of English in the note suggests it was written by someone who did not have English as a first language. Police say it could not have been written willingly by the victim, who was found yesterday afternoon.

Big Cat Reported on Prince Charles' Estate 'Size of a Labrador'

A big cat the "size of a labrador" is stalking the grounds near Prince Charles' Highgrove Estate.

Two burly tree surgeons gulped in fear as the beast prowled under the willow tree they were felling.

John Vine and Nick Cole saw the beast lope out of thicket.

They managed to snap the cat’s paw print after it slinked off at mid morning on Monday.

And experts think it's is a credible sighting.

Mr Vine, 49, said: “I was working 50ft up in tree when Nick shouted to me to look down to my left.

“I saw this black cat, that I first thought was just a domestic cat. I only got the scale when I saw it come half-way up a gate post.

“The cat was the size of a labrador with a shimmering coat, like gloss paint and a black tail as long as itself.

"The tail was what struck me most. It seemed as though it was floating, curled up at the end and hovering in the air.

“The head was similar to a domestic cat, but slightly bigger.

“I wasn’t so much scared, as in awe. I think he was more afraid of me than I was of him. He didn’t slouch but just swept away like a wave.

Credible

“I’ve been a sceptic about these kinds of things in the past and though it was just old wives’ tales, but there’s no doubt in my mind now.”

The sighting was on a dirt track near the Highgrove Estate in Tudor Mead, Gloucester, around 11.30am.

Big cat expert, Frank Tunbridge, 60, has been tracking cats for the past 25 years and believes the men’s account is too similar to other recent sightings to ignore.

He said: “I think they disturbed this animal, working with their equipment and it came out of the thicket. You’ll never see them if you actively go looking.

“I went to the spot and found the hole it came out of - it was the size of a large steering wheel.

“These sightings are increasing and most of them are now so uniform that it’s clear a number of big cats have naturalised in the environment.

“How Mr Vine described it really sums up what others have seen. It is a credible sighting."

He believes most of the big cats seen now are descended from animals like leopards or pumas released by owners after Dangerous Animals Act of 1976 tightened up regulations.

Former Canadian Defense Minister Says UFO Proof 'Irrefutable'

'As far as I'm concerned, it's irrefutable."

Paul Hellyer is in his downtown Toronto office on a Saturday morning, just as he is the first five mornings of every week, still driven at 85 years of age.

He has been finishing up a book, his 13th, that is part memoir, and so he has been looking back on a remarkable career that once made him Canada's youngest member of Parliament, that took him to key cabinet posts in the governments of Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau and that had him run for the leadership of the two main national parties and even form his own political party.

Lately he has not been looking backward - but into the future.

A future in which humans will have to accept they are far from alone in this universe.

Hellyer's "irrefutable" evidence received a bit of pumping this past week. A Winnipeg group that tracks UFO sightings across Canada says 2008 produced a record number of sightings - 1,004 - a 25 per cent increase from the year before. Ontario and British Columbia were the hot spots, reporting 334 and 272, respectively, while Prince Edward Island had only two mysterious objects flying about, Nunavut one and Northwest Territories none.

And that is just Canadian evidence. There is also a report coming out of the Carnegie Institution in Washington that there may not be just one planet out there somewhere that is capable of creating and sustaining life, but as many as 10 billion trillion planets.

Astronomer Alan Boss says that he and others now believe that almost every star similar to our sun could conceivably have a life-harbouring planet orbiting it.

Boss believes there are 100-billion sun-like stars in our galaxy and 100-billion galaxies in the universe, numbers that would result in Vegas putting the odds far, far greater that there is life out there than that there isn't.

Boss, in fact, predicts that some time within the coming three years or so a planet very much like Earth is going to be found spinning around some distant star.

No sooner had Boss had his say than another cosmologist, Paul Davies of Arizona State University, was suggesting that we may already be sharing Earth with forms of life we cannot even comprehend.

"It could be right under our noses," said Prof. Davies, "or even in our noses."

Let others snort at all this, Hellyer says. He doesn't. He's been a true believer since 2005, when he stunned the cautious Canadian political world by announcing in a speech that, in his opinion, "UFOs are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head."

He never believed so in the years that he was minister of defence, but in later years became convinced after watching a documentary on extraterrestrial life by the late Peter Jennings, a Canadian, and after reading a book on the 1947 incident at Roswell, N.M., where many believe a flying saucer crash was covered up by the U.S. military. Hellyer believes American intelligence has systematically sought to block or debunk any information that might convince people that life from other worlds often visits Earth.

"The cosmos is teeming with life," Hellyer believes.

His new book, as yet untitled, will be in three parts, the first part memoir, the second containing his views on religion and the third concerning his thoughts on what went wrong with world's banking and monetary system and how it, along with the environment, might be fixed. The current financial meltdown is almost precisely what Hellyer predicted in a previous book.

In Hellyer's musings about religion, he touches again on the possibility of other worlds, other life forms.

"I think there is a spiritual longing out there," he says. "People are so distressed at the present time by all that is going on in the world. The banking system has fallen apart. People worry there's a possibility of war between the Christian world and the Muslim world. We want something better."

This widespread longing, he suggests, covers everything from people actually hoping there is more intelligent life out there than here all the way to the remarkable rise of Barack Obama in the United States over the past two years.

"People want something with a wider world view," says Hellyer. "That's why Obama has been so well received.

"It's about hope - what we are all looking for."

The book, which he will finish in the next couple of weeks, will also contain a photograph of a UFO.

It was taken late last August, at twilight, from the dock of Hellyer's summer place in Muskoka.

Hellyer was not the photographer but says the man's name is instantly recognizable and that he has signed an affidavit verifying that under no circumstances was the picture rigged or altered electronically.

Hellyer believes, absolutely, that it is more "irrefutable" proof - even though he himself has yet to see a UFO no matter how often he looks up in the hopes of catching a glimpse of something unknown, perhaps unknowable.

"I haven't seen the Taj Mahal, either," says Hellyer.

"But I know it exists."

Western Cape Premier Unfazed By 'Ghosts' at Leeuwenhof

Reports that Premier Lynne Brown asked a priest to deal with ghosts at Leeuwenhof, her official residence, are misleading, she said on Friday.

Brown said reports in the tabloid the Daily Voice made it appear she was scared of the ghosts and had asked a priest to pray.

In fact, Brown said, she had mentioned to a group of religious leaders that Leeuwenhof was haunted and they had spontaneously decided to pray for the spirits to rest.

She said the ghosts were part of the charm of the stately manor and they had not frightened her. But she had experienced a presence from time to time.

"I'd been told about the spirits' presence before I took up residence. I was nervous at first but have gotten used to it."

Over the years various former premiers, including Marthinus van Schalkwyk and Ebrahim Rasool, have spoken about the ghosts, which legend has it have been haunting the house for centuries.

Judge Sir John Kotze was a young man when he saw the ghost of a woman in an upstairs passage. Dressed in white, she had brown hair and blue eyes. The haunting is said to focus on a teak staircase, carved by Chinese craftsmen. Sometimes, the ghost is holding a baby.

The ghosts were researched by AJB De Klerk for his book The History of Leeuwenhof.

In the early days of the Cape Dutch settlement, a fiscal had a lovely daughter who fell in love with a young sea captain. Her parents disapproved and they decided to elope. The night before the ship was to sail, the fiscal heard of their plan and had the captain arrested on a trumped-up piracy charge. The young man was sent to Holland, where he was tried, sentenced and executed. The heartbroken girl refused to eat and wasted away. Legend has it she is the ghost.
