Videos: Followup - Needles UFO Crash Mystery

Videos - Needles UFO Crash followup: In May 2008, a large object with a turquoise glow plummeted out of the sky and crashed into the earth southwest of Las Vegas, NV. Eyewitnesses say it was not a meteorite since several military helicopters hauled it away.

'Ghost Hunters' Will Investigate Briarhurst Manor in Manitou Springs, Colorado

If there are any spirits hanging out at the Briarhurst Manor in Manitou Springs, they may want to head south for the winter.

The 130-year-old mansion, now a restaurant, was one of three finalists for the Sci Fi Channel's "Great American Ghost Hunt." The finalists told their tales on Halloween night during a live investigation of Fort Delaware by the cable channel's "Ghost Hunters" program, with the winner getting a full investigation by the "Ghost Hunters" team.

On Wednesday's results episode of the show, head ghost hunters Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes announced they will investigate all three finalists.

"I get to start telling people all the ghost stories that we have," said Tammila Wright, a local historian who nominated the restaurant for the search. "We're pretty excited."

Wright and her husband, Erick, traveled to Fort Delaware to make the case for the Briarhurst - where strange noises, mysterious footprints and unexplained happenings have convinced them the place is haunted.

The show will tape at the Briarhurst later this winter and the episode should air in the spring, Tammila Wright said.

The Wrights had a couple spooky experiences of their own while spending the night at Fort Delaware, once a Civil War prison camp. Erick Wright saw something large and grey running in the night. Later, Tammila Wright said something roughly as big as herself ran past her and disappeared.

"I felt like someone was running on the left side of me," she said. "I thought it was going to run me over. That really freaked me out bad."

Photos: Is This An Extraterrestrial?

This video was released recently. The submitter states that he received these photos as well as other documents from a reliable source connected with the Dept. of Defense and the CIA. He has other new videos that depicted interesting documents though these do not look to be classified material.

North Korean Attempt to Prove Kim Jong Il Healthy Questioned

It seems that the angle of the shadow cast by the "Dear Leader" is different to his comrades'. Is this a faked photograph or does the North Korean leader cast a different kind of shade?

It was intended to be the photograph that settled the matter once and for all — three months after vanishing from public view, and after reports that he had undergone brain surgery following a stroke, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, was alive and well.

But a close look reveals something shady around the ankles of the world’s last Cold War dictator.

While the legs of his soldiers cast a shadow at a sharp angle, the shadow of the “Dear Leader” is dead straight. In addition, there is a black line running horizontally behind the soldiers’ legs, but it mysteriously disappears behind Mr Kim.

Rather than a genuine photograph, there were growing suspicions last night that the image released by the North Korean authorities may possibly be the result of digital trickery. Yesterday the state-controlled North Korean media announced that Mr Kim had attended a musical performance at which he “waved back to the cheering performers and congratulated them on their presentation”. The photographs were first presented the day before — and together they eroded the consensus among North Korea watchers that the leader of the world’s most unpredictable nuclear power had suffered a serious health problem over the past few months.

The pictures show Mr Kim posing for a group photograph with a military unit, wearing a light coloured winter coat, sunglasses and sporting his familiar pompadour. On Sunday, in similarly undated photographs, he was shown apparently attending a football match.

“He expressed expectation and conviction that all the artistes would conduct dynamic revolutionary art activities in the future too, to powerfully encourage the army and people in the drive for accomplishing the cause of building a great prosperous powerful nation,” said yesterday’s report on KCNA.

Mr Kim ceased making public appearances in mid-August but it was only on September 9 that his absence from view became a matter of pressing concern. That was the 60th anniversary of the North Korean state, a day of almost sacred significance, when parades and celebrations were held all over the country. Despite attending the 50th and 55th anniversaries, Mr Kim failed to appear.

There was speculation that he was ill or had even died — an alarming possibility in a country with a million-strong army, nuclear weapons technology, a hungry population and no formal system of succession. The head of the South Korea spy agency, Kim Sung Ho, publicly confirmed media reports from unnamed US intelligence sources that Mr Kim had suffered a stroke and been treated by foreign doctors.

“Although he is not in a state to walk around, he is conscious,” he told South Korean MPs. “We understand that he can control the situation and he is not in an unstable condition.”

If the recent photographs are genuine, then he has made a remarkable recovery — or reports of his indisposition have been greatly exaggerated. It is a big if — and there has been much poring over other images for signs of fraud or fakery. Pictures released last month, for example, were dismissed because the state of the foliage in the background suggested that they had been taken in summer — probably before the alleged stroke.

In the photographs at the football match Mr Kim is not making great use of his left arm, leading to speculation that he was suffering partial paralysis. In the latest pictures of the military, he is seen to be clapping and raising both hands.

North Korea analysts suggested that the release of the news was timed deliberately to coincide with the election of Barack Obama. “He’s sending a message to the US,” says Moon Chung In, a professor at Seoul’s Yonsei University, who has twice met Mr Kim in Pyongyang. “They’re saying our leader is alive and well, and we’re ready to talk.”sity, who has twice net Mr Kim in Pyongyang. “They’re saying our leader is alive and well, and we’re ready to talk.”

Oh-Mah - The 'Boss of the Woods'

I received the following email on November 5th, 2008:

My question to you is 'have I seen something unusual?'

In August of 2006, I was working in Northern California and was interested in finding bigfoot prints. I have a friend who is a member of the Hoopa First Nation. I contacted him and then spoke to an elder. I was taken to an area where some footprints had just been found. Being skeptical, I took my right boot off and stepped down next to the foot print. I am 7' 1" tall and weigh 395 pounds and wear a size 17 street shoe or a size 19 boot (as boot sizes are often mislabelled). I am of Scot and Lakota Sioux lineage and speak a number of First Nation languages.

After putting on my boots, we heard a screaming howl. My friends started saying Oh-mah was coming and we had to leave. My friend Dave told his elder about what I had done and we went back to the site three hours later. There were numerous large footprints surrounding mine and what I believe to be a large finger hole in the middle of my footprint.

I was contacted a couple of weeks later and invited back to the reservation as they normally lose a good portion of their apple crop to Oh-mah but in 2006 they didn't lose anything. They wanted to know if I could come back every year and walk around barefoot to intimidate Oh-mah and if I have any big friends my size.

Oh-mah either saw me with the much shorter native indians and thought I was another Oh-mah or recognized the footprint as a threat. The elder thought Oh-mah didn't want a confrontation with something almost as big as he and left the area.

The Oh-mah footprint was the same length as mine but an inch and half wider at the ball and 3/4 of an inch wider at the heel. The depth of the print was the same.

I have spoken with some so-called experts from the BFRO and from the Bigfoot Discovery Project and got laughed at but then they wanted me to come with them and speak to the bigfoot via bull horn in either native language. I rather not be used by someone who is too narrow minded for me to speak to the kononpaiochis (literally the people of the north who don't comb their hair -- bigfoot).

Sincerely yours,

Don Talks With Owl Campbell

Note: I have been told that the native tribes in this area (Hupa and Yurok) both use the name 'Omah' or 'Oh-mah' translated as 'boss of the woods'.

Paranormal Presentation at Auburn University Chapel

UPC presented Darren Thompson, who spoke to students about his past experiences as a professional ghost hunter Oct. 30.

Ashley Sisk, director of special projects for UPC, said she got the idea from the University of Alabama.

Thompson is the president of the Washington State Paranormal Investigations and Research (WSPIR), which was founded in 2005 and has 60 members.

Thompson began with a PowerPoint, highlighting some of his past ghost hunts and paranormal sightings.

He then led students on a ghost hunt through the historic University Chapel.

The Auburn University Chapel is one of the oldest buildings on campus and once served as a Civil War hospital for wounded soldiers.

Thompson’s presentation included videos, photos and audio of the scariest locations he has visited.

Thompson uses several devices to record paranormal activity.

“The EMI meter picks up on electromagnetic energy and is thought to record when ghosts interact,” Thompson said.

Thompson mentioned his stay at the Castle Inn, a bed and breakfast located in New Orleans.

“The top floor was closed, and we heard furniture moving above us,” Thompson said. “When we checked it out, all the mattresses had been stuffed in one room.”

“Starvation Heights,” in Olla, Wash., was another one of Thompson’s visits.

Here Linda Hazzard, a doctor in 1911, cured people through starvation. More than 30 people were believed to have died under her “care.”

“We pulled up to the house, and two of our crew members were talking,” Thompson said. “When we played back the tape, you could hear someone saying ‘help me’ but no one heard it before that.”

Auburn graduate student Jonathan Lucas commented on his experience with the paranormal.

“My wife and I moved into a new house in Birmingham, and on three separate occasions I saw an old woman with long hair,” Lucas said. “I believe that spirits do live among us.”

Freshman Bethany Burke disagrees.

“No, I don’t really believe in ghosts,” Burke said. “I feel like if you are in the mindset that you are going to see something already like ghost hunters are, you probably will.”

Photo: Metallic UFO Sighted Over Patchway, South Gloucestershire

An unidentified flying object has been photographed over Filton.

Taxi driver Paul Matthews spotted the object in the air near the Royal Mail depot on 2pm on Friday afternoon soon after he had driven into the Airbus site.

He quickly pulled over his car and watched as what he described as a disc-shaped object hovered in the air before disappearing as swiftly as it had appeared.

Now the Bristol Evening Post is calling on readers who believe they know what the object is to get in touch.

Mr Matthews said that at first he thought it was an aeroplane, microlite or parachute, but it wasn't behaving like anything he had seen before.

It was very weird. It was so strange. I have been a lorry driver in my time and seen some strange things, but this is something else," said Mr Matthews, 45, from Patchway.

"I had never ever seen something like this before. I was really surprised how other people had not noticed it. I thought they would be stopping in their droves, but that was not the case at all."

Denis Plunkett of Winterbourne, who runs the British Flying Saucer Bureau, believed Mr Matthews' sighting was just the latest in a series of visits by aliens to Earth.
Mr Plunkett said: "They come in all shapes and sizes, mainly disc-shaped but in the upper atmosphere also cigar-shaped – the so-called motherships.

"When they get in the upper atmosphere, they discharge the smaller ones that are used for surveillance.

"We have had quite a few UFO sightings in the last few months, in Cardiff for example when one almost crashed into a police helicopter.

"Before that, it was seen over Kingswood and the Suspension Bridge before heading to Wales."

Former RAF pilot Mr Plunkett, 77, added: "I'm not surprised this UFO was spotted over somewhere like Patchway because quite often they visit airports like Filton. They visit anything to do with the air because they want to know the infrastructure of the planet. What they are obviously doing is surveying and collecting information

Buried Remains Of Cardinal Missing, Candidate For Sainthood

The remains of a 19th century Birmingham Cardinal tipped for sainthood are unlikely to have been destroyed by soil acidity in a Worcestershire grave, an expert has said.

Professor John Hunter, from the University of Birmingham, cast doubt on the theory after testing soil from an area near to the Rednal cemetery from which Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman was exhumed.

The ancient history and archaeology professor said it would be "unusual" to find a body buried in 1890 so decayed that no human remains were left.

He said the soil tested was "not particularly acidic" and that he found it "difficult to believe" soil conditions near the grave were so extreme.

Professor Hunter said: "It is very interesting from a forensic point of view to find a body that has completely decayed within this amount of time. It is very unusual and very unlikely. If we have extreme soil conditions that take away human bones, they would also take away coffin handles, which are still there.

"I am not making any claims or accusations. I am merely looking at it from a (forensic) point of view."

Prof Hunter said he chose to investigate out of curiosity and was only able to obtain a sample from ground near to the cemetery, not from the grave itself. He said there were three options: either the soil environment of the grave was different to the sample tested, bones were missed when the grave was exhumed or the body was never there in the first place.

Relics that remain of the Cardinal - including locks of hair, a wooden crucifix and one of the coffin handles - were on display over the weekend at the Birmingham Oratory. They will rest in the Chapel of St Charles Borromeo as the process towards his beatification continues in Rome.

Extraterrestrials Blamed For Power Outage in Chorley, Lancashire

Aliens are being blamed for a massive power cut which affected more than 14,000 people in Chorley.

Last week, thousands of homes and businesses across the borough were left in semi-darkness when two primary sub stations lost power for several minutes.

John Szwarc, of Greenside, Euxton, was travelling along Runshaw Lane in his car at the time of the blackout and says he saw two strange objects flying across the sky.

He said: "There were two UFOs. The main one was a huge bright cross which shone with a brilliant silver colour, although my wife thought that it was more a gold colour.

"There was also a small globe or circular object close to it composed of the same uncanny brilliance.

"Both were static in the daylight sky and both disappeared at exactly the same moment. I am aware that electrical power cuts have been associated with UFO activity in the past."

He added: "The cross was very big and very imposing and altogether weird looking.

"It didn't last very long, perhaps just a few seconds before it went, but it was long enough for us to realise that what we were seeing was quite alien to the sky.

"It certainly wasn't space debris or anything like that."

United Utilities confirmed the power cut but said they did not detect any signs of extraterrestrial involvement.

A company spokesman said: "There was a fault on a cable in a sub station. There can be a number of reasons for such a fault but we didn't find any aliens.
"And we have never had any reports of faults being caused by unidentified flying objects."

A spokesperson for the MoD said: "No reports of aliens or UFO sightings have come across my desk but you can be sure we will be on the lookout in future."

The sighting has now been reported to the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA), which is based in London, for further investigation.

Edmonton Murder Suspect Accused of Producing a 'Practice Run' Film of Killing

An Alberta film producer accused of the death of a missing man made a movie that police allege was a practice run for the real murder.

Mark Andrew Twitchell, 29, of St. Albert, Alta., has been charged with the first-degree murder of Johnny Brian Altinger, 38, who was last seen Oct. 10.

Twitchell is scheduled to make his first appearance in court today.

The 29-year-old fervid fan of the psycho-slasher TV show Dexter is accused of luring now-missing Johnny Altinger to a garage and killing him in a scenario that resembled Twitchell's latest film project – in which a man is abducted, tortured, and hacked to bits.

"We have a lot of information to suggest he definitely idolizes Dexter and a lot of information that he tried to emulate him during this incident," said Edmonton police homicide Det. Mark Anstey. "It was definitely planned. He put a lot of thought, a lot of work, into it."

Police say Altinger, a 38-year-old motorcycle enthusiast who came to Edmonton a decade ago to work in the oil and gas industry, recently met a girl online. On Oct. 10 he went to meet her at a southside detached residential double garage, where Twitchell recently filmed a movie.

Altinger hasn't been seen since, but police believe that even without a body, they have enough evidence to lay a charge.

"The movie was about luring a male from a dating Internet site and basically killing the male in the garage and chopping up his body parts and getting rid of the body," said Anstey.

The garage was rented separately from the house.

Neighbour Lynda Warren said she and her husband Mike noticed that someone seemed to be filming in the garage in late September. But the windows, she said, were covered with black plastic and boards, so they couldn't be certain.

Police believe Twitchell acted alone and didn't know Altinger.

In Twitchell's movie, the victim was forced to reveal personal banking information and passwords for his social network sites.

Shortly after Altinger's disappearance, he appeared to send friends an email message saying: "I've met an extraordinary woman named Jen who has offered to take me on a nice, long tropical vacation. We'll be staying in her winter home in Costa Rica."

It said he wouldn't be back until December. Friends said it didn't sound like the normally reserved man they knew and Anstey agreed.

"It definitely was not Mr. Altinger."

Twitchell has a Facebook site on which he detailed some of his filmmaking activities. In August, he referred to himself in the third person, saying: "Mark has way too much in common with Dexter Morgan."

Dexter is a fictional character from a series of novels and the protagonist in a TV series of the same name, who works for the Miami Metro Police Department while moonlighting as a serial killer.

Twitchell has been working on the fringes of the movie business as an independent director and producer. "The world is getting bigger and so is my influence on it," the father of two tells readers on his MySpace social networking site.

"My lifeblood is filmmaking," he adds. "I'm hooked."

"My other passion in my life is my beautiful wife Jess. I've never been so in love in my life."

The film Star Wars was core to his work. He had been finishing post-production on a low-budget tribute movie titled Star Wars: Secrets of the Rebellion. On his blogsite, he said it was his life's calling to fix what he said Star Wars' creator George Lucas had ruined by focusing on special effects over storyline.

"I was born to do this and every turn I've taken on the path to life has led me to this," he wrote.

Police also want to talk to a man who may have been lured to the garage a week before Altinger on the same premise of an online date.

Two area residents saw a man running from the garage on Oct. 3, eluding a pursuer who was wearing a black and gold goalie mask.

In late August, Twitchell posted a Facebook request for actors to work for free on a mystery thriller short, House of Cards, set to shoot over the last weekend of September – just days before the first alleged victim was seen running away.

Bell Witch Story: Missing Grave Marker Returns After 40 Years

The latest chapter of Middle Tennessee's famed Bell Witch story could be titled "The Tale of the Homesick Headstone."

It begins in 1860, when the 22-year-old great-granddaughter of John Bell died and was buried in the family cemetery, her rest undisturbed until the headstone disappeared about a century later.

It ends earlier this month, when the missing marker turned up in Nashville, upside down and broken in two.

"The stone was found in Madison," said Tim Henson, a local historian and curator of the Adams Museum in the Robertson County town. "It was used as a stepping stone in someone's yard for at least 41 years."

Now the marker is in its rightful place. Getting it there had its spooky moments, which seems fitting for a member of the family at the center of one of the South's most celebrated ghost stories.

Story begins in 1817

In 1817, an angry spirit took up residence on the Bell farm in Adams, about an hour's drive northwest of Nashville. Some people identified her as Kate Batts, an eccentric woman who believed John Bell had cheated her in a land deal.

She tormented the family, slapping, pinching and pulling the children's hair. She sang hymns, preached and plagued their father, who fell into recurring bouts of illness until he died in December 1820, a terrible smell on his lips and a mysterious bottle of black liquid nearby.

The tale has been the subject of books and movies, including An American Haunting (2006). And townspeople and tourists say Kate still haunts today, throwing salad spoons and blue balls in the air.

The supernatural Bell mystique may extend to the headstone of Mary Allen Bell Coke, if the story its finder tells is any indication.

The marker had made its way to a trash bin in Madison, where a homeowner found it years ago and added it to the lawn.

"A contractor from Springfield, working on that house, brought it home," Henson said. The contractor, Janie Hudgens, was intrigued and went online to research the dead woman. That led to funeral director and Bell descendant Bob Bell in Springfield, who called Henson.

Hudgens said that after she and husband Sparky found the stone, she made it her mission to find out where it came from.

"I'm from Alabama, and we respect the dead there," Hudgens said.

"When we found the headstone, that bothered me. For three nights straight, I was on the computer till 3 or 4 in the morning looking for where the tombstone belonged."

The night before they were to give Henson the marker, they were in bed with the room dark when the screen came to life, static crossing its screen. Not long after she turned it off, "it came on again, and it was on the page about the Bell family."

Then there was the wind, which she said "blew the deadbolt-locked door open."

As she told Henson, "I think this stone wants to get home."

Henson recently took it to the cemetery and placed it on the grave, but that was just for a brief visit. It'll remain in storage until it can be safely and securely displayed.

"We just want to place it back in the Bell cemetery that it belongs in," he said. "We know within a foot or two where it's supposed to go. We want to put it back so that it can't be taken away again."

What did the Vela 6911 Detect?

On September 22, 1979 an aging satellite named Vela 6911 detected two very distinct flashes in the vicinity of the Indian or South Atlantic oceans that supposedly could be only one thing: a nuclear detonation. The Carter administration held an emergency meeting, other satellites were enlisted to see if they saw the detonation, which they did not, and utter pandemonium ensued for a short time as the US government scrambled to see who or what had set off a nuclear weapon that day.

It was a small explosion, estimated at only three kilotons, and while the Soviets, Chinese, French and British are unlikely as the originators, the finger was tentatively pointed at Israel or South Africa for testing a weapon. Problem is, the whole thing made no sense.

The first problem was that no other satellites had detected the detonation, even though at least three were capable of it, if not more. It might have ended there, a very scary and potentially dangerous malfunction caused a false alarm. But it didn’t. Astronomers working at the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico detected an atmospheric shockwave that could have been linked to a nuclear explosion. The US government’s hydrophone network detected a very clear echo of a large explosion. But the one piece of foolproof evidence was never found: radiation. Dozens of flights were conducted to try to detect fallout, and none was ever found, though extremely low levels of a certain radioactive element might have been detected in Australia, some time later.

The blast remains a secret to this day, despite South Africa having given up all nuclear weaponry and testing decades ago. If they did it, they still aren’t saying, even though they have no motivation to keep quiet after all this time. Only if it involved Israel would it be worth keeping secret still.

It couldn’t have been a natural phenomena, meteorites do not make double flashes of light characteristic of a nuclear explosion. But given that all parties that may or may not have been involved state it wasn’t theirs, and the fact that radiation fallout was never confirmed, tends to point to something else.

Exploding UFO’s have been brought up as a cause of anomalous atmospheric detonations for some time. Tunguska, most famously, was suspected by some in the UFO community as just such a thing. While no detonation was seen before the Roswell crash, its easily possible that nothing was around capable of detecting it at the time. Could an alien spacecraft have exploded over the Indian Ocean in 1979?

Its not likely we’ll ever know. The facts surrounding the event to this day do not add up, and any potential players in the nuclear arena remain tight-lipped. Most likely, Israel tested a nuclear weapon, but how it managed to not produce detected fallout is a mystery. Could it have been a UFO? Someone in government knows, but they aren’t going to say. Random detonations that look like nuclear weapons, cause international incidents, and could have been misconstrued by jittery cold war powers are something you tend to keep secret.

Paranormal Society Investigates Frederick, MD Museum

The sound of footsteps clomping down the wooden staircase echoed throughout the basement of the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum.

Paranormal investigators Darryl Keller and Stewart Cornelius crept around the corner, video cameras and tape recorders in hand, only to find no sign of who — or what — had made the noise.

It was just another night on the job for Keller and Cornelius, co-founders of Mason Dixon Paranormal Society. Established nearly three years ago, MDPS is based in the Gettysburg area and investigates paranormal activity in over 40 businesses and homes a year.

"We go out to find the most logical, most scientific explanation of why somebody would think their place is haunted," Cornelius said. "So we go out to try to debunk, or disprove."

Keller said that about 70 percent of the time, MDPS can disprove a haunting, citing plumbing problems or high electromagnetic fields, which can cause hallucinations, as explanations for paranormal activity.

But the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum is a different story.

Keller and Cornelius agree that Schifferstadt has a substantial number of unexplainable happenings, such as the disembodied footsteps they heard on Saturday night, or a chair that appeared to have moved by itself.

"It does have paranormal activity," Cornelius said.

This weekend, MDPS spent two nights investigating Schifferstadt, the 250-year-old former home of German settlers. But unlike most of its investigations, MDPS opened the event to the public for a fee to benefit the museum. Attendees got a chance to use high-tech equipment to capture evidence of the house's strange happenings.

Liz Lipke, Schifferstadt's former director and co-host of the museum's Spirit Tours, believes the investigation is a great idea.

"It definitely does help with fundraising and it brings people to the house," she said.

Juan Aldape, one of 15 people who attended, said he bought a new camera for the occasion.

"It's exciting," he said. "I would like to capture a good photo."

This was the second time Aldape and his wife, Sherri, participated in an MDPS investigation.

Keith and Sherri Bell and their daughters, Valerie, 11, and Stephanie, 14, were thrilled to check out Schifferstadt, and said they were not scared. The family watches "Ghost Hunters," a popular Sci-Fi Channel show that features a team of paranormal investigators from New England, Sherri said.

This weekend was not the first time MDPS has had a crack at the Schifferstadt.

The group held a private investigation in July and recorded about 100 electronic voice phenomena — the term for sound picked up by a tape recorder but inaudible to the human ear and thought to be paranormal, Cornelius explained.

"We try to find the best evidence — something that is clear that we can present to the client," Cornelius said. "We don't pull out every little crack and creak that we hear."

Digital tape recorders are just one of the devices MDPS used Saturday. The group was also equipped with a thermal imaging camera that captures temperature differences, digital video cameras, and devices to measure electro-magnetic fields.

The event began with a museum tour and an overview of the equipment.

The investigators broke the attendees into groups, each assigned to a particular part of the house.

Then the lights were turned out, and the investigation began.

Because MDPS recorded hours of video and sound, it will take several days for the group to compile its findings and present them to the museum staff, Keller said.

And that does not guarantee they will catch anything, Cornelius said.

"Spirits don't work on a schedule."

Will the Woolly Mammoth Roam Again?

Resurrection of frozen extinct animals, such as woolly mammoths, could be a step closer to reality, with scientists cloning mice from the brain cells of dead mice which had been in a deep freeze for more than a decade.

The cloned mice were able to reproduce normally and have healthy babies.

It had been thought this approach would not work with frozen animals, because ice crystals in their cells would have damaged their DNA.

But a Japanese team of researchers, led by Teruhiko Wakayama of the RIKEN research institute in Kobe, developed techniques to get around this problem, producing clones from mice which had been kept at -20 degrees for 16 years.

No special chemicals had been added to the mice to cryopreserve them, a situation which would also apply to animals frozen in the wild, such as mammoths trapped in the permafrost.

Dr Wakayama said this meant his team's success "offers a distinct chance to resurrect extinct animals or preserve endangered species".

But he cautioned that before an extinct animal could be cloned, the difficulties of using eggs and a surrogate mother from a related living animal would have to be overcome.

The dean of science at the University of NSW, Professor Mike Archer, said it was a "very exciting" development, if confirmed.

The results, which are published in the journal Proceedings Of The National Academy of Sciences, would give hope to other teams, including his own, who were convinced it would eventually be possible to clone extinct species, including the Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, despite the extreme difficulties.

Bringing back animals that humans had driven to extinction was an ethical issue, Professor Archer said. "We have a moral imperative to do that if the technology allows us."

But the director of the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA at the University of Adelaide, Alan Cooper, said he was sceptical that Dr Wakayama's team had achieved what they claimed. "It could be right, but I'm highly suspicious. It is very hard to believe the DNA would be intact enough."

Professor Cooper said the Japanese team had had to use a lengthy process to get the cloned mice, which could have introduced contamination.

Dr Wakayama's team took the DNA-containing nuclei from the brain cells of the frozen mice and injected them into empty mice eggs, to produce cloned embryos from which they extracted embryonic stem cells. They then used these cells and more eggs to produce cloned embryos that grew into mice in a surrogate mother.

In a separate development, Dr Wakayama's team also created live mice by injecting dead sperm into mice eggs.

MUFON: Large Orange Lights Observed Near Hamilton, Texas

Animation of UFO

Note: This sighting is reported by William Puckett (MUFON UFO Investigator) who received this report via phone call from the primary witness:

I talked to both witnesses and they reported the sighting one week after it happened. They stated that they were driving north-northeast on Highway 281 just south-southwest of the Hamilton, Texas Airport. They noticed four very large orange lights in a horizontal line. Each light was about 50% the size of a full moon. The lights were at high angle, but then all blinked out and then reappeared at a lower angle. The lights then blinked out and reappeared a lower angle, but only one light reappeared. This light then gradually dimmed and disappeared. The witnesses stated that the lights were seen outside the driver's side window (northwest). The witness stopped his car and viewed the lights before they disappeared. No sound was heard. The witness got out his camera, but the lights disappeared before he could take a photo.

William Puckett Comments: Several sightings of similar lights (object) were seen in this area of Texas on October 23 and again on October 25. The identity of these sightings is unexplained. Apparently the military was conducting exercises in the nearby Brownfield Operation Area on the evening of October 23. This investigation is in progress.

Lancaster County, PA Inn Awaits Results of Paranormal Probe

Terri Brown and her husband have owned the 18th-century Farmers Hope Inn for five years. The ghosts arrived much later.

Early last month, a merchandising representative stopped at the inn a quarter-mile north of the turnpike on Route 72, right at the Lancaster County line, and asked Brown a question.

“Do you realize you’re haunted?” Brown said the woman asked her. “She sees (ghosts) like she sees you and me.”

A couple days later, Christine Barnhart, who works as a server, told Brown she saw a lady on a stairwell of the red sandstone tavern. That confirmed what a ghost hunter had told Brown a couple years earlier.

The day after Barnhart saw the lady on the steps, a visitor from the nearby Renaissance Faire said she saw faces in the Inn, as well as the popular stairwell lady.
With all this spookiness suddenly manifesting itself, Brown thought it might be a good idea to find out if there was any way of trying to prove what was happening. She contacted the Greater Pittsburgh Paranormal Society, which sent two representatives to the inn three weeks ago.

They will return today and tomorrow to share their findings with anyone who wants to hear them. Brown will tell her ghost tales — and show some ghostly photos — at 6 and 8 p.m. both days.

“I never had issues with the spirit world,” Brown said. “This is mind-blowing.”

The first structure at the inn was built about 1770 and — wouldn’t you know — one of the 11 ghosts reported on the premises is a Revolutionary War soldier.
“Its secrets are trying to be revealed,” Brown said of the inn. “It’s trying to tell some stories.”

Brown said she understands skeptics will want to see proof, and she’s expecting the visitors from Pittsburgh will provide some.

“The paranormals were out here October 11-12,” she said. “They wanted to come back and spend Halloween. They can answer questions.”

Tim Brown said he and his wife don’t know what those answers will be.

“They won’t tell us what they found,” he said, “but they found something.”

Those investigators use voice recordings and heat sensors to verify the presence of the otherworldly.

“If I wasn’t living this, I wouldn’t believe it,” said Terri, who added that some unusual activities have been taking place around the inn in recent days, which she’ll detail tonight and tomorrow.

“It’s enough to give me, as a skeptic, goose bumps,” Tim said.

Queen's Park Haunted By Former Ontario Politicians

Just call it a haunting experience.

The chills start when you descend through the clutter and junk into the damp vault.

Something invisible hangs in the air. You expect a clawlike skeletal hand to reach out and tap you on the shoulder.

It sends shivers down your spine.

We're in the "vaults" at Queen's Park -- a sinister and little known part of the building -- definitely not on the itinerary for tourists.

My guide is Speaker Steve Peters. He has his own apartment in this 115-year-old rambling neo-gothic building and knows most of its nooks and crannies.

This being the season of ghosties, ghoulies and things that go bump in the night, he's giving me and Sun photographer Ernest Doroszuk a tour of these hallowed, haunted halls. There are reportedly four -- and maybe five -- spirit inhabitants.

Deep in the bowels of the building, the vaults are ground zero for wraiths. This was once the place where movies were stored before they were screened by provincial censors, but it's not porn ghosts or forbidden movie sex romps that haunt the place. This is where an asylum for psychiatric patients was located, before it was demolished to make way for the Legislative building.

The hauntings go back to that time, says Peters.

"One of these stories is that of the three women ghosts, one of them has supposedly been witnessed in this area, out in the hallway, hanging on a coat hook," he explains.

"We have no real physical evidence, but for many people it is synonymous with the early days of the asylum and the three women ghosts who are reputedly inhabiting us here at Queen's Park," he explained.

Three women -- former inmates -- are said to haunt the building. One of them has long white hair, while another has a checked dress thrown over her head. A third hanged herself in the basement.

The most recent ghost sighting was in the Lieutenant Governor's suite.

There were two independent sightings of that spectre.

In 2006, an aide to then Lt.-Gov. James Bartleman saw a man leave the vice-regal washroom, walk past a reception desk and into the historic Music Room. What makes the sighting all the spookier is that months later, a cleaner -- who speaks very little English and was unaware of the earlier sighting -- saw a man in a swallow-tail suit in the same part of the L-G's suite.

The cleaner was able to identify the ghost from one of many portraits of former lieutenant governors that hang in the suite, although the Lt.-Gov's office has been reluctant to identify which one.

The vice-regal suite is currently under renovation, but Peters was able to sneak us in for a brief glimpse. Our footsteps echoed eerily through the vast elegant emptiness.

Peters points out these rooms were not originally occupied by the Lt.Gov. In 1937, former premier Mitch Hepburn sold Government House -- also known as Chorley Park-- and the Lt.Gov took over these rooms which had previously been used by the Speaker. The Speaker moved to an apartment one floor up.

"The most recent ghost sighting was within the quarters of the Lt.-Gov's suite and reference was made that it was a man dressed in red," points out Peters. And that, he says, ties in with another ghost legend around here.

A military man in red is said to haunt the main staircase.

He has appeared several times, scowling and frowning.

"We are not sure of the origins of the individual, but there have been a number of reported sightings of this soldier, dressed in red, coming down the main staircase here," says Peters.

Many of the portraits of former Lt.-Govs. depict individuals dressed in red uniforms, points out the MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London.

Staff who've been around here a long time are familiar with the stories. A surprising number of them have encountered the ghosts of Queen's Park -- although they are reluctant to talk on the record about the apparitions.

Even some journalists -- often here late at night -- have felt the presence of supernatural beings.

Then again, it could just be the ghosts of political careers they've encountered. I'll pass on the movie review board, but certainly hope I encounter the spirit of that other provincial agency -- the LCBO -- this evening. Martini, anyone?

Teenage Hangs Herself During Vivid Dream, Thought Her Flat Was Haunted By Previous Tenant

A teenager may have hanged herself while sleepwalking after becoming ‘spooked’ by stories of a recent suicide in her flat, an inquest heard.

Carissa Glenn, 18, told her family she was having repeated nightmares about a woman who had apparently hanged herself in the rented apartment.

Miss Glen, who had a history of sleepwalking episodes in which she acted out her dreams, was found dead after hanging herself in her bathroom in the middle of the night.

A coroner returned an open verdict because it was unclear whether she had deliberately hanged herself or did so accidentally in her sleep.

Yesterday, her mother Lusia Glenn, 59, said: ‘We think she was in a semi-conscious, dream-like state when it happened.

‘Carissa had heard rumours of a woman who hanged herself in the flat and it really got to her. She started saying she could feel her presence or sense her.’

The teacher added: ‘She would never do anything like this on purpose. She must have sleepwalked and acted out her dream – she used to all the time.

‘She began having dreams about this woman. She told me she was so spooked by it that she hated going back to her flat at night.’

Miss Glenn moved from her home in Leeds to St Ives, Cornwall, after finishing her A-levels to be with friends she had met on family holidays.

She moved into the flat but soon after was told a previous female tenant had hanged herself there – a claim police later found to be untrue.

The week before she died in April, she rang her family three times complaining of a ‘presence’ in her flat, where she is thought to have lived alone.

Her family had pleaded with her to return home, and said they would pay any outstanding rent on the property.

Her sister Lara said: ‘She was always spooked by the supernatural.

‘She believed there was a presence in the flat and would mention it two or three times a week. She was always talking about her dreams, they were vivid. She must have been asleep or half-conscious when she died.’

An inquest in Truro heard she was a ‘happy young woman’ who was popular with staff at the Sloop Inn where she worked as a barmaid.

The day before she died she worked a shift, had several drinks with friends and left in the early hours of the morning. When she failed to turn up at the pub the next day, workmates broke into her flat and found her body.

A post-mortem examination showed the talented musician, who wanted to become a police officer, had twice the drink-drive limit of alcohol in her blood.

Deputy assistant coroner Dr Peter Blackwell-Smythe said: ‘There was concern about a local rumour that someone had hanged themselves in the flat where she was living. And then there was the matter of her vivid nightmares, which were a disturbance
for her.

‘It appears she was a happy young woman who was vivacious. I appreciate concerns about her sleepwalking and her nightmares.

‘It would be reasonable to leave the verdict open, although I believe the evidence strongly suggests she did take her own life.’

The court also heard that she had been upset by the death of a friend and learning that her ex-boyfriend was to marry.

A family statement read: ‘She was a strikingly beautiful girl, intelligent and vivacious with everything to live for.

‘Many who love her and feel very close to her are still shocked and mystified by her sudden death. None who knew her will ever forget her.’

Arizona Man's Paranormal Past Led To Ghost Hunting

Frank Madrid has always experienced the unnatural.

Not the kind of unnatural such as fleeting shadows or a mysterious figure seen out of the corner of an eye. He has experienced the waking-up-with-hands-tied unnatural, the black-shape-rushing-through-me unnatural.

So the fact he has become a ghost hunter is the most natural thing that's happened.

Madrid's fascination with the paranormal, going back to those weird things that happened to him as a child, would eventually manifest itself in the Arizona Paranormal Society.

The group, which he formed in 2006 with girlfriend Lori Marshall, now has 24 members who rotate among the 30 or so investigations they conduct each year.

In most cases, the society is contacted by a concerned home or business owner who is experiencing ghostly visits, from unearthly sounds to apparitions to (in rare cases) the manipulation of objects.

After a screening process involving questionnaires and interviews, Madrid decides whether an on-site investigation is necessary. As at the Triangle T Ranch, as many as 10 investigators arrive with tools of the trade. Their work keeps them busy for hours, with members usually not packing up until 2 or 3 a.m.

Business is picking up, Madrid said (the society does not charge for investigations).

"We've been really busy these last few months, and we're booked all through October," he said. "I think people are more open to the paranormal now than ever before, and they want to know what's going on."

In 80 percent of cases, Madrid said, what is going on is completely normal. A settling house causes thumps and creaks. Drafts can close doors and set rocking chairs in motion. And a bad mix of medication can result in "paranormal" infestations.

Spirits typically linger for several reasons, Madrid said. Frequently, they were the victim of sudden or traumatic death. Some stay to pass on a message to loved ones. Others refuse to move on, to postpone eternal judgment.

And sometimes, they simply don't realize they're dead.

Archaeologists Unearth Camp of 'Real Crusoe'

Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of the campsite of a marooned sailor who is said to have inspired the fictional castaway Robinson Crusoe.

The findings, carried in the journal Post-Medieval Archaeology, follow digs on a Pacific island west of Chile.

Daniel Defoe is believed to have based Crusoe on Alexander Selkirk, a Scotsman rescued from the island in 1709.

Postholes suggest the sailor built two shelters near a stream, with a look-out point to watch for approaching ships.

The island used to be known as Aguas Buenas, but has been renamed Robinson Crusoe Island after the character created by Defoe in his 18th Century classic.

The team also unearthed a pair of navigational dividers from the period, which they believe belonged to Selkirk.

The captain of the ship which found Selkirk referred to a number of mathematical instruments in his possession.

He also spoke of Selkirk shooting wild goats to help his survival on the Pacific island, although there were no relics of that activity.

David Caldwell, from National Museums Scotland, said: "The evidence uncovered at Aguas Buenas corroborates the stories of Alexander Selkirk's stay on the island and provides a fascinating insight into his existence there.

"We hope that Aguas Buenas, with careful management, may be a site enjoyed by the increasing number of tourists searching for the inspiration behind Defoe's masterpiece."

Cougar Sighting Reported on Long Island, New York

After the Montauk Monster, comes ... the Bayview Beast?

The latest in Long Island animal antics takes the shape of a purported mountain lion roaming through the Bayview neighborhood in Southold, according to a complaint made to police last week.

Around 9 a.m. Oct. 17, a very large cat was spotted strolling across a lawn and into the woods near Waterview Drive, said John, a resident who declined to give his last name.

"I pulled up into my driveway and I could see it as plain as day, walking across my neighbor's lawn," he said. He reported the sighting to police.

He described the cat as 5 to 6 feet long, not including the tail, and resembling a mountain lion.

"We have to believe there's something there," said Southold Police Chief Carlisle Cochran Jr. on Friday.

"I don't think it's running stray in Bayview," he said. "I have to believe this is someone's pet who gets out once in a while."

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation said investigators have yet to see any sign of mountain lions. "So far we haven't come up with any tangible evidence - scat or feces from the animal, tracks that can be seen, some sort of remains," said spokeswoman Aphrodite Montalvo. Mountain lions haven't been native to Long Island since pre-Colonial times, she said.

Phantom Students Suspected at the University of Montana

Rumors about the ghosts who supposedly inhabit Rankin Hall are easy to come by. Anyone who has done a google search of Montana ghosts can tell you about the class of 20 phantom students who are said to meet in empty classrooms on the second floor and tales of their voices and restless shuffling echoing through the dark, creaky hallways. Several past custodians and professors even claim to have encountered the ghost of Jeanette Rankin wandering the building at night.

But Jason Sanders, the current Rankin Hall custodian, doesn’t know any of these stories. He just knows what he heard.

Late one night, Sanders, who has cleaned Rankin Hall for a year and half, heard two people walking around above him. Positive he was alone in the building, Sanders went upstairs to check on the noise.

“I heard an entire class in one of the rooms I had already cleaned and locked,” Sanders said. “Then I heard all the chairs move back like everyone was getting up to leave the classroom; but nobody left and when I went in, there was nobody in there.”

“That night I just locked the place up and left,” he said.

Though he was creeped out by the odd noises, Sanders said he doesn’t mind working in a building that might be haunted. He’s since heard stories about windows opening and slamming shut, chairs miraculously stacking themselves and lights turning on and off, but nothing has ever moved on his watch.

“They like me. They don’t want to spook me too much,” Sanders said with a laugh.

But Sanders isn’t the only one with a chilling story about ghosts on the UM campus, nor is Rankin Hall the only building rumored to be haunted. According to legend, Brantley Hall, the University Theater and Main Hall all have specters of their own. Whether you choose to believe the stories or not, they are an interesting and sometimes spooky part of university folklore.

Ellen Baumler, interpretive historian with the Montana Historical Society and author of two books about hauntings around the state, said she has heard many of the stories behind UM’s resident ghouls, but remains skeptical about the sources.

“I have tried to trace a number of these stories, but I have never been able to link anything to historic fact. That doesn’t mean someone couldn’t do it, but you really can’t make a strong case out of third- and fourth-hand information,” Baumler said.

According to Baumler, Brantley Hall is said to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman who committed suicide after the stock market crash of 1929 when her family lost their farm. Several Web sites dedicated to Montana ghosts support this rumor, adding that the student took her life by either jumping out of a window or hanging herself.

Though Baumler has never confirmed or disproved this story, she said it could be done by going through the Missoula county courthouse death certificates from 1929.

“It would be tedious work,” Baumler said, “but it would give us an idea of how much truth there is to this story.”

Regardless of the reason, eerie and unexplainable occurrences continue to happen in Brantley Hall. Mary Kukowski, an IT technician in the building, said she encountered the ghost of a young woman in the restroom one afternoon. Kukowski said she looked down and saw “really old looking, Victorian-style shoes” in the stall next to her, but no one ever left the stall and the feet were not there when she looked back after washing her hands.

Kukowski said she thinks this may have been the spirit of the girl who committed suicide.

Bill Johnston, the director of the Alumni Association, has an office in Brantley and he too said he has experienced the presence of a ghost. He was sitting in his office on the second floor on a hot July day when he felt an icy breeze. All the windows and doors were closed and Johnston said the building doesn’t have air conditioning.

“It started circulating around my feet and my legs, then my torso, then up around my head and shoulders,” Johnston said. “Then it was gone and I thought, ‘Well that was different.’ There was no possible way a normal breeze could have rotated around my body like that. I sat at my desk for a few moments, then I decided to call it a day and left.”

Johnston said he had heard other stories about ghostly dogs barking in the hallway and aggressive spirits slamming doors and windows unexpectedly, but never paid much attention to the rumors.

“If there is something in the building, it presents itself every once in a while, but it never does any harm,” Johnston said.

Some say the phantom who allegedly resides in the University Theater is more spiteful than the docile Brantley ghost. An October 1999 article in the Kaimin, “UM’s Haunted History,” included the story of several students who were working in the building one day in the early ‘60s when they heard yelping coming from the theater.

“The students unlocked the eastern terrace and found a cold, dead, dismembered dog lying there,” the article reads, adding that there were no tracks around the body or bloodstains on the stairwell leading to the terrace.

Tom Webster, the theater’s current director, said his staff has also experienced weird things in the building.

A few years ago, Kevin Higginbotham, the technical director at that time, was working in the office when he felt an odd presence and papers started rustling.

“The windows and the doors were closed so there was no way for any air to be flowing through there. But the papers just started rustling. He told me he packed up and screamed out of there,” Webster said.

Webster said he believes the University Theater is haunted. “It’s a big old building that’s close to 80 years old. If you believe in that stuff it’s just as likely a place as any,” he explained.

For decades, the ghosts in Main Hall have had a reputation for disturbing custodians as they cleaned. However, Bruce Davis, Main Hall’s current custodian, said he has never seen or heard any evidence that the building is haunted.

“I try to scare myself sometimes, but I can’t even do that,” Davis said. “I mean, it’s definitely weird in here at night, especially since they just shut off half the lights for energy conservation, but I’ve never seen anything.”

Davis said he can see why people think Main Hall is haunted, citing the creaky wood floors, the noisy pipes and the reflections that bounce off the building’s many windows and mirrors.

“People see and hear weird things, and their brains fill in the blank. People want to be scared. They want that experience because it’s a great story,” Davis said.

“This was open once,” he added, pointing to the safe in the basement. “I heard some one crying in there… No, just kidding.”

Baumler said one of the most convincing UM ghost stories she ever heard came from Main Hall. After a night class on the top floor, anthropology student David Dick stopped in the basement to use the bathroom.

“He was standing in front of the mirror washing his hands when he saw a man with a flannel work shirt on walk into a bathroom stall. David said he was standing there fiddling with the old paper towel dispenser for quite a while and he thought it was strange he never heard any noise coming from the stall. He looked underneath where the guy went in and no one was there,” Baumler said.

Baumler pointed out that simply hanging around these creepy buildings will not guarantee you a similar experience.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not something you can chase. You can’t go to a place and expect something spooky to happen because these experiences people have are so random. If they weren’t random we’d be able to explain it,” she said.
