Former Mr. Gay UK Anthony Morley allegedly murdered Damian Oldfield before chewing part of his thigh.
A gay chef murdered his lover, cut out part of his leg, seasoned it with herbs and fried it, a court has heard.
Anthony Morley, 35, chewed one of the pieces before throwing it into his kitchen bin.
Morley, a former holder of the Mr Gay UK title, then walked to a nearby takeaway restaurant and told horrified staff: 'I have killed someone, call the police'.
Officers found the naked body of 33-year-old Damian Oldfield on the floor of Morley's bedroom, Leeds Crown Court was told.
He had been stabbed 20 times and his throat cut.
Morley later claimed Mr Oldfield had tried to rape him.
Victim Damian Oldfield
Prosecutor Andrew Stubbs QC, warned jurors that details of the case were 'unpleasant and disturbing.'
He added: 'In carrying out your task in this trial you must not allow the horror of what took place to cloud your calm assessment of the evidence.'
He said the two men had known each other for some years.
Mr Oldfield was openly gay and worked selling advertising space for a homosexual lifestyle magazine.
He was described as ' flirtatious, promiscuous, naturally outgoing and bubbly'.
Morley was 'less sure about his sexuality' and had had relationships with both men and women.
He had won the first Mr Gay UK contest in 1993.
On the day of the murder, in April, the two exchanged text messages during the afternoon and later met in a bar in Leeds, where they both lived.
In the texts Morley told Mr Oldfield he had 'never been properly happy being gay'. Mr Oldfield replied: 'Try me...I'm not your average poof.'
They exchanged increasingly affectionate messages and arranged to meet, with Morley stressing he 'wanted to take it slow'.
Later that night they ended up in Morley's bedroom, the court heard. They had been drinking beer and were both around three times the legal limit for driving.
Forensic experts later found evidence that there had been sexual activity.
Mr Stubbs said Morley used two knives taken from the kitchen downstairs to kill Mr Oldfield.
He slit his throat, cutting a vein and an artery in the process, stabbed him with great force in the chest and 19 times in the back.
The evidence indicated that Mr Oldfield had been lying under the duvet when he was attacked from behind.
Mr Stubbs said that after Mr Oldfield died Morley cut a section of flesh from his thigh, took it down to the kitchen and cooked it.
The jury heard that Morley was wearing only a bloodstained dressing gown and flip-flops when he arrived at the takeaway. His face and hands were spattered with blood.
He later told police: 'I know what I have done is wrong, he tried to rape me, at least he won't be able to do it again.'
Morley denies murder. The court was told he was 'at the very least' guilty of manslaughter, but the jury would have to consider issues of provocation and diminished responsibility.
The case continues.

On October 4, 2008, two hunters in Elk County, Pennsylvania, encountered something strange which they are still trying to find an explanation for. The two men entered the woods at about 4:45 a.m. It had been raining, and it was very dark. For lighting they had only a "hat light" and a mini mag light.
As the fellows walked further into the wooded area, they heard the sound of a coyote howl and the two men stopped. A short time later, they heard coyotes howling from various locations all around the woods. It appeared to be three different packs of the animals. The men had hunted quite often. The one witness told me that he had never heard so many coyotes howling like that before. At times, it was hard for the two men to communicate with each other.
Suddenly about 150-200 yards ahead on the other side of a field, they noticed two very dim glowing lights. The lights were about the size of a baseball and about two feet apart, and estimated to be about 15 feet above the ground. They glowed, "like the indiglo color of a watch." The two men thought the lights were odd, but considered that maybe there were some hunters ahead. The men shut off their lights. As they walked forward, in the distance toward where they saw the first glowing lights, they now observed what looked like a flashlight beam flashing back and forth between the tree line.
They did not think this was odd, since it was archery season, and there was the possibility that other hunters were in the area. Within minutes of seeing the single light beam, about 10 individual white beams of light suddenly appeared. These light beams which "flashed around," seemed to originate from one point, and were not moving around as if being carried by someone. The beams appeared to be about 10 feet above the ground, and projected parallel with the ground, and extended straight out from the originating location.
The other hunter asked out loud, "how many are there?" It seemed odd to the two hunters that these lights did not seem to be trying to find a path through the woods. The men were confused as to what they were seeing. Their attention was then drawn to a glowing figure, moving from the area of the beams of light. "It seemed as though one light beam led it to the field." The glowing human-like form moved about 20 feet out into a grass field. The grass in the area was about six inches tall. The other beams of light suddenly went out.
One witness described the being as similar to "a silhouette of a person just glowing, completely glowing." The man said the best way to describe what they saw was if someone took glow in the dark paint, and rubbed it on a person's body. The being was estimated to be about three feet tall, the head may have been a little larger than a human, and the upper part of the body seemed to lean forward.
The arms appeared to hang straight down, and were longer than that of a human. The legs were hard to see, as the glow was blocking out the shape. The color of the glow was described as a light green, lime color. The being seemed to be moving at twice the speed of the two men, who were walking fast. It actually gave the impression that it was gliding, and no sound was heard.
The one man recalled that he was becoming quite shook up during the incident, and he began to whistle out loud. Moments later, the being, which had been moving steadily, just"stopped on a dime." It remained motionless for about 30 seconds. It then moved about 20 feet into the field, "then suddenly just vanished." It disappeared in front of their eyes, and was not seen again. Within about two minutes after the being disappeared, all of the coyotes in the area suddenly stopped howling. The entire incident lasted a total of about five minutes.
As one witness told me, "I know what I saw. I just don't know what it was." The men went back to the location later that day and looked around for any traces where they had seen the lights and the mysterious being, but nothing was found. The men tried to rationalize what they had experienced, and would be interested to know if anyone has seen anything similar in that area.
This incident occurred amongst a series of other UFO reports, which have been ongoing across Pennsylvania in recent weeks and months. Actually, UFO activity has been active all year across the state. My PA UFO Hotline, as well as the National UFO Reporting Center, and the PA MUFON, have all been receiving sighting reports. While there have been numerous observations reported in the eastern part of the state, there has also been UFO activity in the southwestern areas as well. Among the recent UFO sightings which I have been investigating are the following.
About 2 a.m. on the morning of August 12, 2008, a witness who lives in a rural area between Greensburg and Youngwood, PA, in Westmoreland County, observed a bright light shining in a window. Upon looking outside, the witness observed what was described as two huge double headlights side by side. The lights, which had a yellow cast to them, were just across the road in front of another house, and very low above the ground. At first the observer thought that it must have been a helicopter, but there was no sound, and no rotor blades were apparent. After several minutes, the lights rose very slowly, and moved off into the sky over the trees.
There were a number of independent UFO reports from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, reported during the early morning hours of September 5, 2008. About 12:30 a.m., near New Stanton, a witness observed some oddities in the sky. In the distance, what looked like a fire in the sky above a tree line was observed. (Another similar report came in later from another area.) The luminous display soon disappeared, and a strange object was soon observed in the western sky. This object was round and glowed white, with flashing blue and red lights at the bottom area. The object suddenly vanished, as though someone turned off a power switch.
A second object soon appeared toward the south. This object was moving and was larger in size than the first, and somewhat football shaped. This object moved rather fast, and appeared to drop close to the ground in the distance. With binoculars, the glowing white object, appeared to be perfectly round, with glowing red rectangular lights that did not flash, and were evenly spaced around the outside perimeter.
At almost the same time, another report was received from a man who was driving near South Park, outside of Pittsburgh. The driver suddenly observed two brilliant lights which were equally spaced, which he noticed as they came into view above his windshield. The lights came from the back of his car, and had moved towards the front. Within seconds, a second set of similar lights came into view. These lights were about three feet in diameter and did not blink.
The driver indicated that the layout of the lights would mimic the proportions generally of a standard piece of typing paper with a large light at each corner. The lights seemed to be attached to an object, which was estimated to be about 20 feet wide, and 50 feet long. The object was no more than 100 feet above the ground and was completely silent. The object made a sharp bank and accelerated into the sky above some trees.
At about 2:50 a.m. that same morning near Jeannette, a large orange ball of light was observed moving slowly across the clear sky. The light was estimated to be about a 1,000 feet up, moving east to west, and seemed to be almost floating. It suddenly vanished from sight as though someone shut off a switch.

Owners of the Japanese tavern Kayabukiya, just north of Tokyo, employs a pair of Japanese monkeys called Yat-chan and Fuku-chan to serve their customers.
The younger of the two, Fuku-chan, usually begins the first shift and is quick to hand out customers a hot towel to help them clean their hands before they order their first drinks.
Fuku-chan, who is four, has only two years experience under his furry belt and his work load is limited to hot towels.
Both monkeys are well appreciated by customers who tip them with boiled soya-beans to enjoy during their down time.
Is there a wild cougar roaming rural Jackson County, attacking livestock and spooking residents? Or is it just imaginations running wild?
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources insists it was not a cougar that recently mauled a 900-pound horse in Rives Township near Jackson.
But the veterinarian who saved the horse's life, the owner of the stables where he was boarded and the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy say they're certain the predator was a cougar, also known as a North American mountain lion.
The attack has added fuel to a long-running debate between the state, which says the last known wild cougar was seen in the state in 1906, and naturalists who say that cougars appear to have established a small but wide-ranging population in Michigan again.
As proof, they point to hundreds of sightings from almost every county and both peninsulas in recent years. Now they're tracking reports on Web sites complete with videos of large cats that certainly look like cougars. So convinced is the National Park Service that they posted warning signs at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore after a volunteer said she was stalked by a big cat.
In Jackson County, the mauled horse survived, but the Sept. 16 incident follows by three years the killing of another horse in a nearby township.
DNR spokeswoman Mary Detloff said DNR biologists and cougar experts analyzed photos of the injured horse. "We do not believe this was a cougar attack," she said. "We don't know what it is from."
The Jackson County veterinarian who treated the animal disagrees.
"Those are large claw wounds and obviously feline in nature and done by a very large cat -- certainly not a house cat and much larger than a bobcat," said Dr. Robert Sray. "I am certain, based on 40 years of treating animals, that this was done by a cougar."
Pat Rusz, director of wildlife programs for the Michigan Wildlife Conservancy, contends the DNR has long been stonewalling on the existence of cougars in Michigan.
"There is no doubt this was done by a cougar who jumped on the animal's back and sliced it open on the side," Rusz said. "We have a small but viable breeding population of cougars in Michigan."
Officially, the DNR concedes there may be cougars in Michigan, but suggests they are escaped or released pets or transient cougars from the nearest known breeding populations in North and South Dakota.
In the Jackson attack, the 10-year-old mare, Daydream, required 30 stitches to close a slashing wound.
The attack happened between sunrise and noon when the animal was pastured with about 10 other horses. DNR field representatives took photos and measurements and looked in vain for tracks.
"It appears the cougar came out from the woods and attacked when the horses were by the property line," Rusz said.
John Darlington of Lansing said he believes his horse, a 20-year-old mare, Shawna, also was swiped by the cougar. "She's pretty feisty and I think the cat scratched her when she came over to Daydream," he said, showing a fresh scratch across the horse's right side.
In September 2005, a 1,200-pound horse was killed in nearby Parma Township. Township Supervisor Wendy Chamberlain and the conservancy have said that killing was the result of a cougar attack. The DNR said it couldn't determine what killed the horse.
"I have personally seen cougars three times around here over the past few years," Chamberlain said.
Jackson County isn't the only place where sightings have been reported in recent days.
The Save the Cougar site (www.savethecougar.org) lists nine reported sightings this month, in Jackson, Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Manistee, Mackinac, Hillsdale, Oscoda and Arenac.
Another site, Michigan Cougar (www.michigancougar.com/sightings.htm), chronicles hundreds of reported sightings in all 83 Michigan counties.
On the site is a photo of what is believed to be a cougar track found in June at Oakland County's Bald Mountain.
Other local sightings include what appeared to be a pair of large cats in Auburn Hills in March and a cat estimated to weigh around 60 pounds outside Kensington Metro Park near Milford.
But the most dramatic evidence is video purportedly taken in April near Mason in Ingham County. The video (http://www.michigancougar.com/CountySightings/ingham.htm) shows what appears to be a very large cat at the edge of an open field. The cat left prints that measured more than 3 1/2 inches across, the site says.
Still, sightings are anecdotal and lacking in hard evidence.
After Sleeping Bear Dunes volunteer Eleanor Comings reported being stalked for 20 minutes in 2003, the National Park Service spent months driving hundreds of miles of park roads and trails looking for proof of big cats.
Motion-detecting field cameras captured the images of 22 bobcats, 300 coyotes and 40 red fox, as well as striped skunk, river otter, mink and weasel, but no cougars.
Indisputable scientific evidence is scarce ... making the Michigan cougar truly a UFO -- or Unidentified Furry Creature.

September 2008 - Recent UFO captured over Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, same location of a famous sighting in 1998 (video and witness statement below)
Previous report from October 1998:
On Saturday, October 3, 1998, the Han family visited a mountainside cemetery on the outskirts of Kunming, a large city in China's Yunnan province, 1,050 kilometers (630 miles) southwest of Shanghai.
While they were paying their respects to their ancestors, "at about 11:50 a.m., Han took a look back into downtown Kunming and all of a sudden discovered an extremely dazzling object flying over the city. He tracked the flying object with his video camera and shot about three minutes of videotape of the UFO."
The object, which emitted "a dazzling light," first took "the shape of a blazing ball surrounded by two pieces of black rubber, and then five diamond- shaped objects flying in a diamond formation, said Han. This process continued for more than ten minutes." (See the newspaper Guangzhou Morning Post for October 16, 1998, "UFO over Kunming," by Alan Zhang. Many thanks to Stig Agermose for forwarding this newspaper article.)
In Addition: The whole process of its transformation and final disappearance lasted about two minutes.
The UFO could change color. At first it was silver, then became lighter, then turned orange. Strangely, about half a minute later, with a flash of light it changed shape from a cylinder to the disk shape usually associated with flying saucers.
After viewing Han's video, some Chinese scientists affirmed its research value. A member of Beijing's "Chinese UFO Reseach Association" said that although there have been a number of videos of UFOs in all parts of the world, few filed sightings are as long as two minutes. Over the last two decades, China has gathered thousands of eyewitness accounts of UFOs. Some say the perpose of publicizing this video was to tell everyone that UFOs have an objective existence in the material world and we humans should pay attention and strengthen our investigations and research.

On the morning of February 18, 2008, Sr. Adão Pedra discovered deeps impressions in the fields near his house.
He gave an interview to the researchers of the G.P.C.U-Scientific Group of Research Ufológicas, Jose Nussbaum and Rita Reis, affirming that he heard no noise, nor saw anything unusual, except the continual barking of the neighborhood dogs. During the visit to the place, the researchers of the G.P.C.U confirmed, that in fact the vegetation was lying forming 3 circles in the plantation of rushes in the field near the house of Pedra.
The circles were of different sizes, measuring approximately between 5, 8 and 10 meters of irregular circumference.
The rushes were lying in the southwestern direction and kept its original color, although being in water up to one's knees.
Quarter Center
Beyond the marks found in the field, they were photographed by Mr. Teodoro Gonçalves Axe. There were two circles in a prolonged extensive area in the rushes of the submerged one behind the building. The researchers ventured into the area, with much difficulty, and the area was very difficult to take measurements and make calculations.
Compass reading discrepancies suggested that there was possible electromagnetic interference. The marks were irregular, varying in form and size.
Trees that surround the submerged impression made it difficult for people, and even animals to access. The area was 40 meters in length x 5 meters.
It seems that something extraordinary is also happening in Pelotas, where since the beginning of the year, UFO activity has increased.

A 17-year legal battle over a 5300-year-old "iceman" found in the Italian Alps has finally been settled — but not before several people associated with the discovery died "from a curse".
German hikers Helmut and Erika Simon found the remains of the man, later named Oetzi, in the province of Bolzano and alerted local authorities to the discovery.
But district officials refused to pay the Simons an adequate finder's fee, which under Italian law is 25 percent of the discovery's value.
Lawyers for the couple argued the discovery had contributed millions of euros in income from added tourism business while Bolzano Council claimed they had footed the bill for Oetzi's excavation and provided an expensive climate-controlled home for the iceman.
After appealing a 2006 ruling in favour of the Simons, the province finally agreed to a payout of 150,000 euros ($250,000) overnight.
But the ruling came too late for Mr Simon: he died in a mountaineering accident in 2004 and the death of six other people linked to the discovery has raised the spectre of a Tutankhamen-like curse associated with Oetzi.
It's a big deal over a small man: Oetzi was barely 160cm tall when he died at age 46, most likely of injuries sustained in a conflict.
But his excellent physical condition and well-preserved clothes and weapons — including goatskin leggings, a grass cape, a copper-head axe and a quiver full of arrows — marked him as one of the great archaeological finds of the modern era.

Halloween is less than a month away, but already a De Soto family is thinking about supernatural forces. While doing yard work this weekend, the family dug up a tombstone more than 100 years old- and that was just the beginning.
For some people being around graveyards invites feelings of paranoia and fear. So imagine what it would be like to discover you were living on top of one.
"I had the room that was right there (points) and that's were the tombstone was found for the girl and it was kind of scary" says 17 year old Debra Robertson.
The Robertson's recently demolished their home that was build in the early 1900's. On their Sunday afternoon off, the family decided to finish cleaning up the rubble left behind, but that work was soon interrupted.
"When I got over here this is where I had to stop because this is where I ran into a tombstone" says Steve.
"Well when I saw it I was like freaked! When my sister Brittany told me and I was like what the!" says 8 year old Matthew.
Using his tiller, Steve struck the head stone. He's since left it alone
"I was afraid of finding the grave underneath" says Steve.
The tombstone is of nine month old Mollie Phillips who died in 1895. The Robertson's fear there may be other graves on their land as well.
"You got one there (pointing) one over there, you got that one" Steve points out.
The Robertson's believe there maybe as many as 13 other graves on their property. Gaila's lived here her whole life and says she's never been scared, but is now remembering what her sister said.
"She always saw a woman in white wandering through the house at night" says Gaila.
19 year old Brittany had a similar experience.
"I heard baby's crying. Maybe not everybody believes in that, but I used to hear it" see says.
Historians will soon be coming to look at the site. The family says they hope it can be preserved, even though they find it a little spooky.
"Is it going to be harder to sleep tonight?" I asked. Steve answered with a resounding, "Yes!"
Others in the family are more brave.
"I think it's awesome!" says eight year old Matthew.
And even though Halloween may still be weeks away, the Robertsons say with their black cats and newly discovered tombstone, they've already decorated for this year.
The Robertson's suspect the site may have been a family burial ground since the last name on the tombstone- Phillips, is the same name of the family that sold the property to them.

Secret documents have revealed the MoD have been studying the paranormal and other unexplained scientific phenomenon for use in the war against terror.
The newly released files show that just after 9/11, the Ministry of Defence conducted a research project into psychics - with the possibility they could be used to locate terrorist cells.
Last night saw the UK debut of the eagerly anticipated US TV show Fringe, which takes its name from fringe science, an umbrella term for such bizarre notions as ghosts, UFOs, psychics and invisibility.
The series, from JJ Abrams, the creator of Lost, centres on FBI agent Olivia Dunham and uses paranormal plots following in the X-Files tradition.
Coincidentally, as the show takes off, the truth of just how seriously our Government have taken fringe science is slowly emerging.
As Abrams has said: "Though you could say it's science fiction, the weird thing about Fringe is that a lot of the stuff is at least in the realm of possibility.
"When Star Trek came out and they had their communicators, that was a cool dream. Now, in our pockets, we all have communicators. We read a week ago that invisibility is coming. There's stuff you wouldn't think in a million years is possible, and it's happening every day."
That's also the official approach according to Nick Pope, who once ran the MoD's UFO project.
He said: "Everything that you think is Sci-Fi, someone in government or in the private sector is trying to get it to work."
In the Nineties, he worked for the MoD in a department blandly named Secretariat (Air Staff), looking at strange phenomena including UFOs, crop circles and even ghost sightings on military bases.
The research continues today.
Nick said: "As with all these fringe sciences, the reason we are doing this isn't necessarily that the MoD corporately believe in things such as anti-gravity, mind control and telepathy.
"But it is a classic example of what we call low probability, high consequence - which is basically saying it is a long shot, but if we can get just one of these fringe science things to work, the military applications would just be phenomenal."
Freedom of Information has led to the disclosure of top secret MoD documents which show the Government have been looking seriously at fringe sciences. We can assume they didn't want us to know about it as the documents are marked "Secret UK eyes only" - one of the highest classifications used by the MoD.
One study into the phenomenon of psychics, or remote viewing as the MoD call it, was secretly commissioned only a month after the New York terror attacks.
A questionnaire was sent to psychics, none of whom knew it was an MoD project, and it was probably disguised as an academic study. NICK said: "It raises the question of what other academic studies looking at fringe sciences are being run by the military?"
In the documents, there are hints of small breakthroughs. Testers asked psychics to identify a series of hidden images including a wine glass and a picture of Mother Teresa.
The files reveal the psychics "may have accessed some features of the target" - that is, the images. Later, it even talked about recruiting one or two of the psychics to "go after the sensitive targets".
The next part of the study was blacked out but coming so close to 9/11 would suggest that terrorists were the "targets".
It is well known that most police forces have used psychics for years, but the extent to which the Government and the MoD use them is unknown.
Nick said: "According to documents recently released, it transpires that defence intelligent staff have also been dabbling in other fringe science areas.
"These include exotic propulsion systems and even the possibility of using energy fields to modify people's behaviour, hinting at the exploration of mind control."
Nick suspects much of the research is contracted out to defence corporations run by ex-military, which means the MoD can get round the Freedom of Information Act.
Quinitiq, the recently privatised UK defence research organisation, have been doing research into invisibility and Bae Systems were looking at anti-gravity.
Nick admits that when he was first given the job of looking into unexplained phenomena, he was sceptical.
But his research into UFO sightings and access to formerly classified files soon convinced him that the phenomenon raised important defence issues, especially when the witnesses were military pilots or where UFOs were tracked on radar.
He said about 80 per cent of UFO sightings could be explained as misidentifications of something ordinary, such as aircraft lights or satellites.
And he admitted that in about 15 per cent of cases there was insufficient information to draw any firm conclusions.
But he said approximately five per cent of sightings, including some in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, seemed to defy conventional explanation.
A new survey has shown that 88 per cent of people in the UK didn't know their Government had fringe science projects and 77 per cent thought it was a waste of money.
But Nick said: "At first, I probably thought it was a waste of time and money as well, but these are fairly modest bits of research.
"Tome, all the scientific progress we have made has come about because we dared to dream and push the envelope of human understanding to the limit.
"If we took the view that all these things are a waste of money, we probably would never have developed the aeroplane or the rocket.
"There were always people in history saying that things were impossible but we did it anyway. Some of these things may just be things we haven't figured out how to do yet. It seems crazy not to try."
Fringe stars relatively unknown Australian actress Anna Torv, probably best remembered for playing a lesbian love interest in the BBC series Mistresses, and the two-hour pilot cost £5million.
The show will stick to familiar paranormal territory but, in a departure from JJ Abrams' Alias and Lost, each episode can stand alone.
Abrams hopes people's fascination with fringe science will get them tuning in to his latest production on Sky.
He said: "It's definitely meant to scare the hell out of you, but it's also meant to make you laugh."
Fringe continues this Sunday at 9pm on Sky1 and Sky1 HD.
'It transpires that defence intelligence staff have been dabbling in other fringe science areas'

Millions of animals are abandoned in America each year, and sadly many of them never find new homes. Chicago cat Bubba was one of the lucky ones, but time on the streets can be traumatic.
Bubba has trust issues. Although he bonded with his new owners, after a leg amputation and being put on a special diet due to food allergies, but he doesn’t trust strangers, hiding or hissing at anyone who came along.
Bubba’s new owners turned to an animal behaviorist, who recommended training and behavioral techniques, but to no avail. Desperate, Bubba’s owners looked for help, and they turned to a pet psychic, and this was the result
Through speaking to Bubba telepathically, the psychic determined that Bubba is so shy because HE is really a SHE. Bubba is transgendered. Bubba suffers from low self-image and has been mentally distraught because she has been forced to live in a male cat body for so long.
Now Bubba’s owners need your help and are looking for donations to raise money to enable Bubba to continue his therapy sessions with the pet psychic, and to raise funds for Bubba’s upcoming gender reassignment surgery.

Well-known psychic Elizabeth Joyce has doubts there will be an election this November. Her instincts tell her that, come next week, there might be “rioting in the streets and martial law” and that President Bush will henceforth carry out his term indefinitely.
But that’s next week. Tonight, there’s a vice presidential debate. And Joyce’s predicted outcome runs closer to conventional wisdom on the much-anticipated matchup between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. She believes that the debate will ultimately go a long way in determining the next president, and that Biden will take the day so long as he doesn’t push her too much.
Joyce, whose website claims she was “born with the authentic gift of psychic ability,” was one of a handful of prominent psychics Politico surveyed to get a better “sense” of how the Palin-Biden matchup might shake out. According to their occult minds, Biden has the edge and, ominously, the moon and stars are not aligned in Palin’s favor.
Deanna Fitzpatrick, a Reiki Master from Biden’s home state of Delaware, also got the vibes the senator would win. Her psychic instincts tell her that during the debate, Palin “should take some pauses, instead of trying to answer too quickly. I think she’s going to struggle at that. I think she’s going to have a tendency to grab at things too quick and she just has to take her time.”
A Politico reporter predicted that Fitzpatrick was a supporter of the Obama-Biden ticket; she confirmed the premonition.
Before the Thursday evening debate, the gang over at Psychic Source TV (self-promoted as “the nation’s oldest and most respected psychic service”) will do a debate preview, the first of its kind they’ve done.
Psychic Moira O’Dowd, numerologist Paige Kelley and “not just a tarot card reader” Therese Baxter broke it down for Politico on Wednesday.
When asked how many customers have asked them questions about the election, O’Dowd said that they’ve gotten quite a few requests to do astrological readings of Obama and Biden, but not really any of McCain.
“Maybe that’s an indication of our client base,” O’Dowd said.
Biden’s astrological sign is Scorpio, which according to the Psychic Source website means he’s “deeply and emotionally connected to his career” and “focuses his passions on the task at hand.”
Palin is an Aquarius, which, O’Dowd said, means she’s free-spirited, free-thinking, innovative, outspoken and articulate — "although she hasn’t shown that lately.”
That means Mercury’s retrograde could really stultify Palin. “There’s a slight astrological possibility that Mrs. Palin would pull out. ... Or she maybe just have one of those long Ms. South Carolina pauses,” O’Dowd said, referring to a notorious and excruciatingly embarrassing beauty pageant flub that occurred in 2007. She pegged its likelihood at 50 percent.
“It should be very interesting," she said. "With moon square Neptune, it is going to make it problematic for her to find her words.”
Palin supporters might find comfort in numerology, where Palin checks in with a “life path number” of six.
Sixes “can be compassionate,” says Kelley. “They can try to pick up the burden. … What I’m sensing in her life path is these are the characteristics that you’ll see her exhibit when she does the debate.”
Biden, Obama and McCain turn out to have the same “light path number” of 11, which denotes someone who “is highly intuitive about situations” and “a very deep thinker.”
Both vice presidential candidates have the same “destiny number” of eight. This is determined by a computation involving the letters in their name. Kelley said this suggests that both are “status-oriented, power-seeking and have high material goals.”
“They also have expression and are very equipped in managerial sense, outstanding with organizational and administrative activities.”
Unfortunately, she said, this value also suggests both are filled with a certain level of intolerance.
Finally, those most interested in the entertainment value of the vice presidential debate will be heartened by the vibes Baxter has picked up.
“I think they are going to tussle, and I think the fur is going to fly,” she said.
“This thing I’m seeing: Biden will underestimate her — he does that sometimes with women — but she is going to lose her cool. She’s going to go off script and it’s going to get interesting.”
Overall, the consensus among the psychics was that the presidential race has at times been too unpredictable for them.
“I am a very good psychic, but every four days everything has changed for me in the last month and a half,” Baxter said.
Baxter and others say that the debate could very well affect the remainder of the race. But you hardly need a psychic to tell you that. So in the end, it turns out, your guess is as good as theirs.
“At this stage of the game,” said Kelley, “this race is too close to call.”

Ghostly goings-on at a Lincoln fancy dress shop promise to send shivers down customers' spines.
People who pop into Jesters in the lower High Street could meet a few unexpected characters.
Owners Hazel Smith and her son James say they have heard ghostly footsteps, seen a hand appear through a wall and seen the ghosts of two children.
Mr Smith said: "About a year ago, I saw a hand slide through he wall, push a hanging costume and leave it swinging backwards and forwards."
Employee Will Evans (19), from Plover Grove, Birchwood, Lincoln, has experienced spooky goings-on.
One day I took my sister Kiah (five) up to the top floor, then nipped down again for something," he said.
"She started really, really screaming. I rushed back up and she was staring into space.
"Back downstairs, she said she had seen two children."
The ghostly figures were wearing Victorian garments.
The Smiths may be shaken, but they are not stirred to take action.
Mrs Smith said the "intruders" are mischievous, rather than anything else.

It rose up out of nowhere. The looming clock tower was like an apparition from some other place and time, and I risked wrecking my car to get a better look at the mammoth stone building atop which it stood. What was this place? And how could I get inside for a closer look? What had been a spur-of-the-moment side trip on the back roads of West Virginia was about to get more than a little strange.
It turned out to be the Weston State Hospital, an enormous mental hospital in Weston, W.Va., begun in 1858 and completed in 1882. It is now the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, a moniker that doesn't sit well with advocates for the mentally impaired. And it was open for tours!
As I was pulling out my credit card to pay for my tour, I did feel a momentary twinge of conscience. Was it ethical to play voyeur in a place where so many undoubtedly had suffered? Possibly not, but there was no way I was going to pass up the chance to see this unbelievable structure, like a castle out of a storybook.
The first patient was admitted in 1864, a female housekeeper from Ohio said to suffer from domestic trouble. The hospital closed in June 1994 and has stood empty since. For 14 years, the ghosts have had the place to themselves. They were free to wander the 2 1/2 miles of corridors in the main building. They could slam any or all of its 906 doors. Actually, I hadn't even thought about ghosts until I began reading the brochures the new owner supplied. In August 2007, the hospital was auctioned off to a Morgantown businessman whose hope is to turn the buildings and grounds into a resort. In the meantime, he has opened the hospital to the public, and it has become a favorite haunt of eager ghost hunters. For the truly brave, nighttime tours begin at 9 and last until 5 a.m. Doug Johnson was to be my guide for my daytime tour. A relaxed, affable guy with a wide grin and sandy bangs brushing his forehead, Doug had at one time been a charge aide at the hospital and had made a career in the field of mental health. There was just one tiny, little thing: He looked remarkably like the demonic doll Chucky.
As luck would have it, Doug and I had the place to ourselves that warm afternoon. In the 200,000 square feet of corridors, treatment rooms and patients' quarters, there were the two of us and the quiet woman at the front desk who took my admission fee.
Doug led me down a long, wide hallway past room after tiny cell-like room, all the while filling me in on the hospital's history. In the early days it was not uncommon for a husband or a family to have a spouse or relative committed for afflictions as vague as cerebral softening, female disease or novel reading. Political excitement, religious enthusiasm and seduction also were symptoms that could merit a few years, or a lifetime, of confinement.
As we walked deeper and deeper into the hospital I learned from Doug that the building, built of blue sandstone by Irish masons, is believed to be the world's second-largest hand-cut stone masonry building. The only other such building that is larger is the Kremlin. Doug's mobile lecture on the history of the treatment of mental illness was riveting. Before the advent of psychotropic drugs, electric shock and lobotomies, there virtually was no treatment other than behavior modification, he said. Patients who couldn't be controlled often were caged. It chilled my heart to picture the anguished children Doug described living their lives caged for their own protection and for that of others.
The state basically abandoned the building in 1996, allowing nature free rein. The dozen years of rain and moisture have taken an alarming toll. Walls are crumbling, and paint hangs from them and the ceilings like the rags of a shroud long buried.
The place was getting to me.
Doug had taken me to the farthest reaches of the hospital. No one knew where I was. My cellphone was in the car. And he was telling me murder stories. "People did die here," he emphasized, and then proceeded to describe the death of one patient at the hands of two others. By this time we had reached the seclusion cells, which once housed violent patients. Doug pointed out the thick metal ring embedded deep in the wall, to which a patient would have been shackled so nurses could attend to him without fear of injury. He had me test the heavy metal mesh of the inner door by pushing against it with all my might. I couldn't budge it. Then he ever so subtly stepped slightly aside, and it was clear from his stance I was meant to step inside. Like the clueless blonde in all the slasher movies, I did.
The doors closed with all the finality of a coffin lid. Um, Doug? Doug? I'm feeling a little weird in here. Doug?
I wouldn't say I burst out of the cell when Doug opened the door after only a few seconds. But I didn't waste any time, either.
After three hours we were back at the main entrance. I was blathering my thanks for a memorable tour and silently counting my lucky stars I had made it back with my sanity and carotid artery intact. Doug suggested I come back for a nighttime ghost hunt. Perhaps then I'd see Old Ruth, who trips the unwary; Jacob, an apparition from the Civil War; or an angry nurse who prowls the halls.
Backing out, I thanked Doug one last time, all the while thinking you really would have to be out of your mind to spend a night in this building.

One of Middle Tennessee's newest residents is a man of many titles.
Jonathon Sharkey said he's a presidential candidate, a former wrestler and a vampire.
He is in jail, charged with threatening the president and a court official.
Sharkey faces felony charges in Minnesota and Indiana.
Neighbors said he showed up in Tennessee this summer. Since that time, he's left a lasting impression.
He made a name for himself on the Internet where he claims to be the imperial king of vampires.
In July, he moved from Minnesota to Grundy County, Tenn. Altamont is about 100 miles southeast of Nashville.
Neighbors knew nothing about his checkered past.
"Just average Joe type," said neighbor Don Kamtman about Sharkey. "You know, just nice, very polite. Never said a cuss word or anything."
When word spread that Sharkey wanted to turn a plot of land into a commune for fellow vampires, Kamtman knew trouble was brewing.
"These people up here are very religious, you know," he said. "And they don't want change and vampires they don't need."
On Saturday, local law enforcement arrested Sharkey for felony warrants in Minnesota and Indiana.
The charges include making threats against President Bush and an Indiana judge.
Grundy County Sheriff's investigators may never know why Sharkey moved into their county. But with the information they've gathered so far, they've come to at least one conclusion.
"In my 18 years on top of the mountain this is one of the most bizarre cases that we've dealt with," said Grundy County Chief Deputy Lonnie Cleek.
When investigators arrested Sharkey they confiscated two rifles and this wooden stake with steel spikes.
For neighbors, "it's just been kind of a mess and we're caught in the middle," Kamtman said.
"You know we sold the place to him and it's just causing more trouble for me and my neighbors. And I wish I hadn't sold it to him now," he said.
Kamtman can't turn back time. He's keeping his faith in the legal system.
Because of overcrowding at the county jail, Sharkey is being held in the Marion County Jail.
He faces possible extradition to deal with his felony charges in Minnesota. While in jail, someone set fire to a piece of Sharkey's property. Grundy County investigators said so far they have no suspects in the case.

It is so incredibly rare that you would think Siamese twin fish attached at the stomach would never survive.
But at eight months old, these two Nile Tilapia fish in Thailand have found the perfect way to cope with life upside down... or the right way up if you're the lucky twin.
The bigger fish protects its smaller sibling on the bottom, while it in turn looks for food.
The Nile Tilapia fish is a common freshwater species found in tropical rivers, canals, lakes and ponds but these two were found in a Bangkok aquarium.
The fish can reaches a maximum of 2ft in length and can weigh up to 9lb.
Originally from waters stretching from Africa to the Cape Horn, the fish was introduced to freshwater irrigation systems so as to fight algae growth but has now become a pest.
Behind shrimp and salmon Nile Tilapia is the third most imported fish to the U.S.
It is not the first time Siamese twins have been discovered in the animal kingdom.
In July, a pair of barn swallows conjoined at the hip by skin and muscle tissue, were found in Arkansas.
The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission said it was a 'one in a million - probably more than that - occurrence'.
When discovered by officials the birds were not eating, and one died, while a veterinarian later put the other down.
Experts say finding conjoined birds is rare because they likely die before being discovered.
They believe the birds came from a double yolk egg.

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.
Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.
They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.
A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources, although scientists are sceptical.
The attack was reported in parkland in the centre of Lazo, a village in the Maritime Territory, and was witnessed by three local people.
A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say.
"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
"When they saw the men, they scattered in different directions, taking pieces of their kill away with them."
Mikhail Tiyunov, a scientist in the region, said it was the first he had ever heard of such an attack.
While squirrels without sources of protein might attack birds' nests, he said, the idea of them chewing a dog to death was "absurd".
"If it really happened, things must be pretty bad in our forests," he added.
Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.
A Lazo man who called himself only Mikhalich said there had been "no pine cones at all" in the local forests this year.
"The little beasts are agitated because they have nothing to eat," he added.

A 7-year-old boy broke into a popular Outback zoo, fed a string of animals to the resident crocodile and bashed several lizards to death with a rock, the zoo's director said Friday.
The 30-minute rampage, caught on the zoo's security camera, happened early Wednesday after the boy jumped a security fence at the Alice Springs Reptile Center in central Australia, said zoo director Rex Neindorf.
The child then went on a killing spree, bashing three lizards to death with a rock, including the zoo's beloved, 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to "Terry," an 11-foot, 440-pound saltwater crocodile, said Neindorf.
The boy also fed several live animals to Terry by throwing them over the two fences surrounding the crocodile's enclosure, at one point climbing over the outer fence to get closer to the giant reptile.
In the footage, the boy's face remains largely blank, Neindorf said, adding: "It was like he was playing a game."
By the time he was done, 13 animals worth around $5,500 had been killed, including a turtle, bearded dragons and thorny devil lizards, Neindorf said. Although none were considered rare, some are difficult to replace, he said.
"We're horrified that anyone can do this and saddened by the age of the child," Neindorf said.
Alice Springs police said they are unable to press charges against the boy because of his age. Children under age 10 can't be charged with criminal offenses in the Northern Territory. His name was not released because of his age. Neindorf said he plans to sue the boy's parents.
The boy's small size is probably the reason he didn't trip the zoo's security system, which relies on sensors to detect intruders, Neindorf said.
"I just want people to learn that they can't let their children go and run amok," Neindorf said. "If we can't put the blame onto the child, then someone has to accept the responsibility."

The Louisville Ghost Hunters Society in conjunction with Jeffersonville’s Howard Steamboat Museum sponsored a psychic investigation as an activity for people attending the The Mid-South Paranormal Convention, which was held in Louisville last weekend.
Sixteen people rambled around the beautiful old Howard Mansion that dates back to 1894. The activities started at 11 p.m. Saturday and went on until 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Along with museum staff and board members, my wife Diane and I volunteered to help monitor the event, so that the museum’s artifacts would remain secure. The Louisville Ghost Hunters Society also sent along five members to direct the investigation.
I am proud to report that on my watch in the mansion’s den, no artifacts levitated away or were damaged by flying ectoplasm. And I was only mildly terrified when I was left all alone there with those creepy stuffed birds, elks and other hunting trophies. I was almost sure that those glassy eyes were following me around the room and at midnight it seemed highly possible that the spirits of those animals just might return to wreak their revenge.
The ghost-hunting participants were mostly enthusiastic amateurs decked out with digital cameras and recorders and a variety of other hi-tech electronic devices designed to capture paranormal activity. I am only glad I didn’t have to watch the basement or the attic. I’ve heard some stories from the museum staff and volunteers.
Diane was on duty up on the third floor with some people who had a radio-like apparatus that emitted static sounds, interspersed with something that sounded like occasional human speech sounds. They claimed that the words were being spoken by the ghosts present in the room.
The device was used like a Ouija Board to ask questions. They also asked if the ghost would give them a sign, or if it had a message for someone there. Diane said she was silent pleading that any sign or message should not involve her in any way. Fortunately, neither was forthcoming.
Most of the participants were dressed casually in blue jeans and T-shirts advertising their affiliation with their local psychic investigation group. Some of them came from as far away as Maryland. There was a wide range of ages represented and this sort of activity — which I though would have been dominated by males — evidently appeals to both genders.
There is something about being in such a situation, however, that makes you want to tell total strangers about every peculiar experience you have ever had, even if you are normally a complete skeptic. I heard a lot of weird stories being told and even told a few myself, in the spirit of the evening.
It gets sort of competitive after a while and you find yourself searching for things to say just to hold your own. I could kick myself for not telling about the old log cabin we stayed at in North Carolina. Diane got a lot of mileage out of that one.
There were people present who had investigated the Waverly Hills Sanitarium in Louisville, the prison from “The Shawshank Redemption” in Ohio and even the resort hotel that was the setting for Stephen King’s “The Shining,” out west. Diane was very popular with this crowd, as she has a bona fide murder/suicide in her extended family.
It seemed that the more directly you claimed to have experienced paranormal phenomena, the higher status you held in this group, up until the point that others decided that you might be delusional and or just making things up. Many folks described how they talked directly to spirits and some even reported seeing full body apparitions. Mostly, at the Howard Museum, however, they were just looking get some sounds on their recorders that suggested possible paranormal activity.
According to the Gallup Polling Organization, about one-third of Americans believe in haunted houses and about the same percent believe in the existence of ghosts. Younger people and liberals tend to be less skeptical than older people and conservatives. For example, an 18-29 year old is more than twice as likely to believe in the existence of ghosts than someone 65 years or older and 42 percent of liberals believe in haunted houses compared to only 28 percent of conservatives. But anyway you look at it, a lot of people are believers.
Overall, this investigation provided no conclusive evidence of any psychic phenomena at the museum, but that’s no reason to not visit the museum anyway. The Howard Steamboat Museum and Mansion represents an important part of our local heritage and is a living connection with our past — something well worth experiencing and preserving. And if you have to see a ghost, I have heard stories about the Belle of Louisville, and in a pinch there is always the Industrial Nightmare this time of year.

Underground Railroad passages, battlefield sites, a presidential assassination and heralded architecture are all things that make the Buffalo Niagara region unique.
These same things share something else in common. They make the area, especially the Tonawandas, “one hell of a haunted place,” Western New York author John Koerner told a captivated crowd of more than 50 people Thursday night at the City of Tonawanda Public Library, where he gave a lecture about ghosts in the Niagara Frontier.
Koerner’s presentation was an eye opener for Kimberly Starner, 17. “I didn’t even realize there was so much around here,” she said of the area’s ample ghost tales. “It’s kind of creepy, especially the North Tonawanda stuff.”
The region has a particularly high volume of ghost stories because of its places of transition — railroads, bridges, the Erie Canal and Niagara River — and because the area began to boom post-1825, Koerner said, adding that it takes ghosts an average of 200 years to stop appearing at a particular site. “We’re pretty young in terms of ghost stories,” he said.
Koerner theorized that it takes spirits roughly twice the human life span to achieve whatever it is they’re doing in the paranormal world.
And just as there are good and bad people in the physical world, there are ghosts both righteous and malevolent in the paranormal one.
Koerner shared three Tonawandas-related ghost stories as part of his lecture:
• This one involves a North Tonawanda family with a little girl who has two imaginary friends, Koerner said, adding that the family wishes to remain anonymous. One night, the girl’s mom went into her daughter’s room, on the second floor, and found the bedroom window opened. “My imaginary friend said that mommy and daddy would like it if I jumped out the window,” Koerner said. “Negative entities tend to attach themselves to very young girls,” he said.
According to Koerner, negative entities are drawn to names derived from Mary or Ann, because of their religious significance. This particular’s girl name is Bethany.
• Koerner’s next tale was titled “The Incident of 1920.” The story involves a 7-foot winged ghost that haunted a family on Bryant Street in North Tonawanda and also was seen flying around Sweeney Street Cemetery.
• The third anecdote took place at the former Our Lady of Victory hospital in Lackawanna, where a gift shop volunteer was attacked by a robber. According to the volunteer, and a witness from Tonawanda, before the gun-brandishing robber caused any harm, the spirit of Father Baker appeared, causing the gunman to leave, Koerner said.
Another alleged hot spot for ghost stories is the famed Riviera Theatre. “If you see a theater, you can pretty much guarantee it’s got some stories,” Koerner said.
For all of the stories he’s researched, Koerner does have one of his own. He said he saw a ghost once while he was walking to his apartment in Rochester while in college. He said he saw a ghost in an alley playing “mournful music” on a violin. He later learned the building was used by faculty of the Eastman School of Music.
Koerner’s lecture resonated with City of Tonawanda resident Janet Holler, who said she’s read extensively about many of the stories Koerner shared. “I’m inclined to believe it,” she said. “I think there is some kind of energy left when we die.”

Linda Moulton Howe - Earthfiles.com - October 3, 2008 Laramie, Wyoming - My investigations of the worldwide bloodless animal deaths - that law enforcement has long called “mutilations” - began in September 1979, almost thirty years ago. I was Director of Special Projects in the Denver, Colorado, CBS affiliate, that was then KMGH-TV. For nine months, eighteen hours a day without stop, I tried to get to the bottom of what was causing the animal mutilation mystery. My greatest surprises were the law enforcement who told me they knew we were dealing with “creatures from outer space,” as they put it, because of the aerial discs, beams of light and even non-human creatures encountered by eyewitnesses in pastures where mutilated animals were found. For this Chinese woman who suffers from a condition called artificial urticaria, her skin has served as a notebook for all the years of her life.
This strange medical anomaly has no ill effects, but most agree that it is very weird.
Huang Xiangji is a 50-year-old woman from Chengdu who uses her skin like writing paper.
Huang claims that when she writes a word on her skin by using her fingernail, the letters protrude from her skin a moment later.
“I used my body as a notebook for years,” says Huang.
Even as a child, she was able to do this and she would often create shopping lists on her arm before going out to the stores.

A Japanese woman addicted to comics reportedly turned to the Internet to look for someone to kill her parents, after they asked her to clear out her cartoon-filled room.
News reports say the 36-year-old woman – who is unemployed and lives at home – filled up three rooms with several thousand comic books and videotapes she had collected with an allowance her grandmother sent her.
She reportedly became angry after her parents told her to throw away some of her comic books to make space for her sister who was planning to move in.
The reports say she posted a message on the Internet asking for someone to kill her mother, who manages a bar in Tokyo, and her father.
Police intervened after being notified are seeking to charge her with intimidation.

Paul Spear thought he was seeing things. Standing on the dock with his 8-year-old son Kevin and friend Frank Rothwell, jigging for small fish, he thought he saw a large piece of the Sesuit Harbor bottom move.
"I thought for an instant the ground was moving," Spear said.
"It looked like a giant ball of seaweed," Kevin Spear added.
Rothwell and the Spears watched in amazement as a moss- and algae-covered 5- to 7-foot long animal slowly moved past them, within reach of their fishing poles, in just 3 feet of water, and headed out of the harbor with the outgoing tide.
It was moving too slowly and the tail was too broad and large to be a seal, said Paul Spear. He and Rothwell knew right away what it was: a manatee, a tropical species rarely found north of Florida, and never found in Cape Cod Bay.
"It's like telling someone you saw Bigfoot," Paul Spear said of the skepticism he expected when telling people what they'd seen.
"I know what a seal looks like, and the head looked totally different," said Rothwell, a vice principal at a Framingham High School. Spear is the work/study coordinator at the school and coaches the hockey team.
But the two found a sympathetic ear in Erin Burke, an aquatic biologist with the state Division of Marine Fisheries. Burke handles protected species, and the manatee, with approximately 3,000 in U.S. waters, is listed as a federally endangered and protected species.
Burke believed the men's report was a credible sighting and that this manatee might be the same one that was seen in the Taunton River in Fall River Sept. 18. A manatee was last seen in Cape Cod waters in August 2006, and Dennis is the farthest north any manatee has ever been seen before.
"I'm aware of those sightings, and we believe they are credible," said Cathy Langtimm, a United States Geological Survey wildlife biologist working with manatees in Gainesville, Fla. Langtimm confirmed that Dennis marked the northernmost sighting.
"It must have gone through the canal," said Burke. She was concerned that, with water temperatures at 61 degrees yesterday, the manatee might end up stranding. She asked for the assistance of Cape harbor masters and the state environmental police to patrol the shore and shallow waters to locate the animal.
Langtimm said manatees tend to head south when waters dip below 68 degrees. Those who venture up into northern waters tend to be males who are simply exploring, continuing northward as long as there is plentiful sea grass and other vegetation to graze on. Typically, they remain in shallow waters, less than 30 feet deep. They also need to drink fresh water and will seek out culverts, storm drains, and other freshwater outlets along shore.
"They can handle cooler water for short periods of time," said Langtimm, but sometimes they become trapped by a cold snap and can die.
Burke asked that if anyone spots the manatee they take a photo, focusing in on distinctive scarring on their backs and tail, that are made when they are hit by boats. Researchers in Florida can match these scars to a catalog of photos that helps them identify the individual.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police will be looking for the animal today in and around Cape Cod Bay, said Capt. Peter Hanlon.
State officials believe it is a manatee that has been known to come up to Rhode Island, Hanlon said. Because of the dangers posed to the animal by the cold water, anyone who spots it should call the Cape Cod Stranding Network at 508-743-9548, Hanlon said.
NOTE: a pair of Manatees were spotted in the upper Chesapeake Bay 2 weeks ago
